My worst cod trip ever......
 

Got a call to go on a ns boat out of Leonardo to catch some cod. All I got was 40 ling and 12 keeper flounder (orl). I had a hard time understanding what I was doing wrong, as Billy got a couple of cod and Ron got a nice one, but none for me and Frank. I was finally told by Ron on the way in that The Capt. told the the mate to with hold the cod bait from me. I have been assured by the Capt. that next trip I can have some cod bait. I have also been assured by the mate that if my gratuity improves the cod bait will be available'

Overall a great day on the water.

Well you caught, so it's not environmental (e.g sun tan lotion). My guess is rig or style. I've learned to drop the ego and mimic the hot hand's terminal tackle and bait. Maybe while folks that landed cod were waiting on a big rap in the rod tip, you were setting the hook quickly?

Mugging is always a good bet too! :D

That might just be the weirdest report i have read. Never heard of mate or captain holding out giving customer the desired bait. I am assuming the cod bait was fresh clams. Why you would not request certain bait from mate is puzzeling. Would never catch me on a boat that treated a paying customer like that. :(

Personally I believe that fishing while sitting in a chair is good for catching flounder but for Cod, not so much! I also believe that all those pesky Flounder just kept blocking all the Cod from his hook!

Simple solution - if you pay for a charter and are refused bait and others get it, $0 tip and a public bashing of the boat on the forum. Name names, none of this ns boat bullsh*t.

I guess I had better straighten this up. My original post was all b.s. We were having a great day bottom fishing and some of the other fisherman hooked some really nice cod and I kept getting either flounder or ling so I started busting the Capt. and the mates balls and asked if I could have some cod bait. We were all using fresh clams. The ball busting grew thru the day and we had a lot of fun and a great day. Toward the end of the day I had a really good hit, probably a big cod, however about half way up I lost it, finished reeling up and still had a nice ling on, at which time the mate told me,,,,,,we let you have cod bait and you still "F" it up. I then started saying this is the worst cod trip ever. I thought my original post was so stupid everyone would get it. I am sorry, I did not mean to disparage the Capt, mate or the boat.

Congrats on a great trip. You defitely got me with this one. Not knowing the parties involved when i read original report I was like what is this guy talking about. Sounds like you had a great day of fishing and a better day of ball busting. I defitely got PUNKED on this one. :eek:
