Creek Chubs as bait?

Caught a few chubs in the SB a week or so ago when fishing with my little girl. Considered using them as bait but wasnt sure on the regs so let it be. Is it kosher to keep minnows from the trout fisheries?

It's imperative that you 1.) release all creek chub and 2.) tell me where you caught them so I can assess their population. ;););)

Not sure about the legality , but they are great bait, so I've been told!

Baitfish regs are on page 31 of the Digest. Chubs are classified as a baitfish, daily limit is 35.

Any legal species caught can be used as bait. I've used live trour, sunfish, perch, bullhead, crappies, as well as suckers and creek chubs. Game fish have to be caught with a rod and reel, must meet minimal size limit and you can't keep more then your creel limit. Bait fish such as creek chubs also have a creel limit bit have additional methods of being caught

i think there used to be a rule about keeping creek chubs from trout stocked streams during times closed for stocking...i don't feel like looking it up right now but check the regs

I've done well in the past using creek chubs for toothy critters and the occasional bass. The bigger, the better.

I was 17, one of my brothers 10, when we fished near Bull's Island on the Big D. Back then I owned a real boat. I had potted minnows in the Little Shabakunk, and one of them was a nice, big, 7-inch creek chub we saved for last & I let Rick use. We tipped jigs with the minnows & caught lots of small walleye (December). Rick heaved the chub and soon braced, fast to something monstrous running upriver. Didn't snap the line, drag set well, but the hook tore off. Big walleye, we supposed, but that could have been a musky he hooked on the mouth edge.

In other words, fill the bucket and see what I can catch on 'em. Should be interesting.

Saw a very big fish in the SB last night, assuming a catfish but I guess it could have been a carp. Swam right up to me as the sunfish were chasing the grub into shore and then gone. If I wasnt wearing costas, would be questioning the whole experience.....

Well yeah you can't fish or catch bait in waters that are closed to fishing

Re: Creek Chubs as bait?

the important stuff with catching bait in trout stocked waters are the gear restrictions.

around trout time:
Quote:

In trout stocked waters baitfish may be taken only with hook and line: from April 4 to June 15, or in waters open to fishing during the pre-season closure, from March 16 to June 15.
the rest of the year:
Quote:

Seine
Not over 50 feet long in ponds and lakes over 100 acres; in all other waters not over 30 feet in length.
Exception: In trout-stocked waters and special regulation trout areas a seine may not be more than 10 feet in length and 4 feet in depth.

Minnow Trap
Not larger than 24 inches in length with a funnel mouth no greater than 2 inches in diameter.

Umbrella Net
No greater than 3.5 feet square.

Dip Net
Not more than 24 inches in diameter; may be used only for alewife or blueback herring.

Cast Net
No greater than 8 feet in diameter; may be used only in streams that are not trout-stocked or special regulation trout areas (may not be used in lakes).

Hook and Line
Maximum of nine single hooks or three hooks with three burrs per contrivance on all waters except the Delaware River where only three single hooks are permitted.
the policies are pretty restrictive actually.
