bowfin

the third in a trifecta of first time caught species for me this year is the bowfin. not much information on them for NJ, but i've found some stuff. I think i'll be trying friday at waway hoping the water temps there are still keeping the bowfin in aggressive mode rather than mid spawn.

as usual, any little experience anyone has had with them is appreciated.

There is a website im going to try to find and post for you. Its all about them in jersey waters. Even maps and locations of where they were caught. Think its Bowfinhunters or something like that.

I was at waway on friday and Sunday- water temp is 67.
People get them on spinnerbaits burned around the weedlines next to the deep water

I saw another angler with one 2 years ago at Wayway. He told me it was a catfish . Looking a little closer it was no catfish. He didn't reveal any info and probably didn't know what it was.

Caught a lot of them while living in Florida. They fight much harder than a bass, and I used to target them. Bait wise, they will eat live or dead shiners readily. They will also strike most lures that bass will eat. They seem to like weedy, slow-moving backwaters.

I fish Yanda a lot since it is near my house & have yet to get a BOWFIN or have seen one caught but I know that they are there. I have talked to guys who target them there & they say to work weeds in the back west corner.

The landlocks were crazy last weekend & were spread out everywhere chasing whatever was thrown in the water-especially pink lures. It was an aerial day.

The state must have dumped quite a few bows in there because we could not keep them off the lines.

I was the guy trolling around with the big red hairy beast barking at everyone who came close. Yuma & I are there so often that he thinks he owns the place. We got 5 good sized LL & a few wee ones, a boatload of bows, a few bass & the obligatory mud snakes. Too many of those dam things on there, I try to give them away to bucket brigades whenever possible.

FYI-Most Chinese take out places will swap them for some chow! They love em.
