Flounder?
Anyone catching flounder lately Belmar?
|
Re: Flounder?
I'm curious too. Was gonna go sometime this week. Been dying to wet a line. I either go to shark river or Raritan bay.
|
Re: Flounder?
I've been told that the water temp in shark river is anywhere between 39 and 41 degrees. Still a little cold for flounder. Plus the rain from today is gonna screw up the fishing for the next couple days. I'll probably go anyway because I have nothing else better to do.

Re: Flounder?
Fished the AH fishing pier last Wednesday for about an hour at high tide.
Used some clams and chummed with corn. Results..........saw one seal stick its head out about 20 feet east of the pier, a few ducks and birds and a lot of ice still in the water and windy. Naversink River still had thin ice all the way across west of the Oceanic Bridge. Apparently still a wee bit early . |
Re: Flounder?
I'd think we are at least a few more weeks from any decent Flounder fishing. Nice sunny days and an outgoing tide is going to be your best bet. The reason I say outgoing is the ocean water is still cold so on an incoming tide, all that cold ocean water is going to be coming in the River... Shark River has the huge shallow dark mud flat in the back... Once the sun beats down on that dark mud it's going to warm it up along with the water so the water will be at it warmest when outgoing. That is what's needed in the early spring to get those Flounder feeding.
Good luck and please let us know how you do. |
Re: Flounder?

We caught some beautiful winter flounder from the sandy hook surf last april while bass fishing. They'll bite first on the inside bays and rivers. |
Re: Flounder?
Remember the tiny mouths. A striper hook is a bit large fro flounder.

Re: Flounder?
i've never tried it but i'd say, if you're familiar with it, fishing for them like you fish for carp but with a heavy enough weight to hold it in whatever current is there might be pretty good? If i lived close enough to a good area for flounder, that's what i'd do.

Re: Flounder?
I'd be using chum pots too. They make a big difference.

Re: Flounder?
In the 1970's my father and I caught many flounder in great kills harbor.
People would be lined up catching them. I wonder if they still fill that harbor..... Anyone know? |

Once the bay warms up a bit I'd try areas like Keyport Harbor and then Round Shoal. |

Re: Flounder?
When I was much younger, I lived in Leonardo. We fished the beach, between the State Marina & the Navy Pier, for Flounder April & May. Uasally was best about an hour before high tide, fish would move up on the flats. Small stripers were a by-catch, with a keeper as a bonus every now & then.
Sand worms & Blood worms for bait. We even used to dig the dloodworms in the same area at low tide. |
Re: Flounder?
I put in some time yesterday Monday 3-16 at Shark River . I fished 3 hours of the out going tide with out a single bite. There was skim ice 1st thing in the morning, which quickly melted. No bites, No fish and a sore back from digging up bloods.

Re: Flounder?
I heard of a few in the Quincy Bay (Massataxes) area but the water is too cold for a good bite. I suspect there were a lot of fish and in any crowd there are a few that are hungry.........JC

Re: Flounder?
Looking thru my log book I had the best flounder fishing in Raritan Bay from April 12 till the end of the month. Then they would move and Roamer would turn on then the Cedars. Early season is the Keyport flats. When ever we have a cold snowy winter it pushes the spring bite back two weeks. When your chumming those flounder up put out a bass rod with clam. The later the bite the longer they stay.

Re: Flounder?
If the weather holds I'll have the dirty shrimp out. Some flatties and SAMs advice with a striper rod (or two) dead stickin
