A couple Walleye and an interesting find..
Got out in The Mugger on Tuesday for about an hour with ScowardNJ. Left work around 2:30, in the boat by 3:00. Found a couple willing Walleye, one at 17" and one at 20". Second fish came just as the rain started around 4:15, so we called it quits. Filleted the keeper with a buddy shortly after. As I checked the stomach contents, I was surprised to find it completely empty. Fish was chubby though, so further inspection revealed two Twinkie-sized pouches filled with eggs! From my understanding, Walleye will not spawn until March/April. Pretty interesting. Pics to prove it happened.]

That's good work for an hour..Nicely Done!
Wonder what the full of eggs thing is all about? I'm sure someone on this site will know....always get an explanation from the knowledge base on this site. One of the great things about NJF. |

Re: A couple Walleye and an interesting find..
Good job boyz, way to jig em up.......from what I know the eggs start developing in early winter and they dont mature until february, males pulled thru the ice in jan are already squirting their love juice.

Re: A couple Walleye and an interesting find..
They Do spawn in the spring....but egg development proceeds right through the winter.....the eggs you are looking at are immature......same thing with the giant musky from last Saturday....guaranteed full of eggs/underdeveloped. A few years ago I caught a 7 lb. class walleye off of Chapel Island and when I opened her up there where at least 8-10 baby crappies in her about the size of a half dollar.....a lot of times when you are battling the fish up, their stomachs do have contents but are automatically vomited out. Even over the summer at night, rarely is there anything in the stomach. In fact I've had them upchuck bait in my livewell while still alive....it's an automatic response to stress I guess.

Re: A couple Walleye and an interesting find..
in 2012 Anthony and I fished the walleye tourney on LH and he jigged the winning fish 5.4lbs at dawn. I preceeded to fill the livewell and placed the fish in it withing a minute after unhooking him. We were gonna make a straight run to dows and check the fish in and release it. 3 minutes later we tie up at Dows and he goes to grab the walleye, and there are 6 large dead herring floating in the livewell w the walleye, all of them were in good shape not decomposed freshly eaten. I beleive alot of these gamefish eat in bursts and theres alot of timing involved in their feeding habits. I have caught many hybrids that still had herring tails exposed in their throats.

Re: A couple Walleye and an interesting find..
i ate a small male last weekend and he had his GUNS LOADED. watch out ladies:rolleyes:
i would think that by spitting up stomach content when feeling threatened by either another predator fish, or a jig in the lip, the predator fish may eat or be distracted by the fish/stomach content it spits out allowing it to swim away. which i guess is why they always have their mouth open on the way up and outa water. and if their mouth is open, that explains why walleye rarely cut through 6-10lb test line. my guess. |
Re: A couple Walleye and an interesting find..
IMO the fish throws up cause the last thing it ate got him in a bad spot so they don't know whats going on they just reject what is in there stomach also i am with everyone that the fish are stacking up egg and waiting for spring. walleyes don't cut threw line cause their teeth are more rounded pointy but no edges

Re: A couple Walleye and an interesting find..
Completely normal to find eggs in Walleye, perch, pike & muskies almost ready for a spawn. They feed heavy starting in late fall to develop those eggs. If you catch one in February and press on their bellies, thet will squirt them out. Not always though, but in more mature fish yes.
