Re: Fluke hooks

I use Gamakatsu shiner hooks for bait fishing (prefer the ones with the upturned eye) and Gamakatsu bait holder hook for my gulp top teaser on the bucktail. Don't know the sizes off the top of my head sorry.

We have fished Reel Seat Custom Coil jigs, up to 4 oz, with 6" Gulp grubs for two seasons with very good success. We also place a 4 inch Gulp minnow on a 3/0 Gamakatsu bait holder, 12 inches above the jig on a dropper loop. Fish hit both hooks. ;)

3/0-5/0 octopus hooks. Throw all those English/Kahle aka "fluke" hooks in the garbage. They are a relic from the past and should no longer be used by anyone.

And here come the critics in 3...2...1...

I never understood those "English" gold hooks. They do work but fluke enhale them. Mortality has to be 90% using them. Agreed...TOSS EM!!

Please click one of the Quick Reply icons in the posts above to activate Quick Reply.I use a 5/0 bait holder for my grubs. Thread it through the body till it comes out by where the tail starts. I se octopus 7/0 and 4/0 for whole squids . Sliding snell rig for that.

If there is a better bait holder than the Matzuo 5/0 sickle bend for using with gulp teasers I haven't seen it !!!!!!!!!!

In my bucktails I'm using 7/0 and 8/0 black nickel mustards

Spot on Steve. Went from a 4/0 few years ago, to a 6/0, and finally up to 8/0. It's amazing, even the short 14" postage stamp size fluke take that 8/0 and 6" grub right in. Nice part about it, never have to worry about gut hooking a fish. Hook ends up in the same place every time. I've had people look at me with that teaser hook and say, what are doing, going cod fishing........... I just smile.
