About 6-7 bowfin in an hour of fishing. One of the best fighting fish I ever caught. The bait of choice was shiners cut in chunks.

I don't think we have many Bowfin in New Jersey.
I know I never caught anything that looks like that.

I checked their range map and it looks like they don't live around me.

Used to catch them on the Little Pee Dee River behind Myrtle Beach AFB in South Carolina. Extremely powerful fish that could spool you.

My all time favorite fish to target! My spot got wiped out because people thought they were killing snakehead.

Really?? But they were biting non stop before! I mean every 10-15 minutes I had to grab my pole. What did you use for bait?

I caught a 12.5 pounder last year up in Ontario and let me tell you if fought HARD. The guide soon after beat it to death in the boat with an anchor - lot of blood involved. Pretty gruesome, but apparently they're a predatory fish and kill off large amounts of bass and even pike. The game wardens up there tell everyone to kill them if they are caught. A really cool fish though, and one of the best freshwater fighters.

Nice fish! Its a shame that the guide killed it. I would doubt any game wardens would recommend killing them as they are a native species and definitely coexist with bass and pike throughout their range. I sincerely doubt they would have any effect on the bass/pike populations.

That's what we were told, however maybe it was more of a personal vendetta our guide had with the fish :D

Here is one I got last year at Waywayanda. I was using a frog in the pads and
he just smashed it thought I had a 10lb bass the way it fought. Very aggressive fish.

Which lake was that? Are they abundant there?

Waywayanda State Park. There is supposed to a lot of them in there but
that was the only one I have caught. I am targeting bass though. I do know
other people who have caught them.
