Cut browns & channels 7/31

Took half a day off yesterday and hit some rivers to see whats going on now that its a bit cooler out. Went to the bait spot and some other spots on the crick to find the local Brown Trout in a feeding frenzy. I started off fishing for Gills and Rock Bass but after seeing the 100's of Trout surfacing I switched it up a bit. Managed to get all my bait and wack 4 Browns in the process, 2 @ 9-10 inches, 2 @ 12-14 inches, missed a few as well. I released the 2 small Browns cus they were cute, the other 2 weren't so lucky, LOL!!! Nice summer limit of Trout on July 31st!

Headed over to the invasive species grounds, water was pretty low, I didn't have to get my shorts wet for a change, YAY! No other anglers in sight except for a bunch of youngsters on the PA side. Casted my rods in and the fishing was super slowwwwwww, only 2 runoffs on live Gills. 2.5 hours go by and I'm wondering where the hell the fish are, then I remembered I had some other bait to use, HEHE! Chummed up the hole with some Gill and Trout chunks and it worked wonders. Let the Channel Cat parade begin, YEA BUDDY!!! In about 2 hours I got 5 Channels between 4 and 8.1 lbs. I'm happy with that, nice assorted bag today. Pretty good action on this night considering there was ZERO for 2.5 hours. Pictured are the 2 biggest Channels of the night, 1st is 7lbs 10ozs, long and slim, 2nd is somewhere around 30 inches weighing 8lbs 1 oz. Relaxing, peaceful night on the river, couldn't ask for anything more. YEA BUDDY!!!! TIGHT LINEZ!!!!!!!:D

Nice cats! I've only tried for them once or twice this year and came up with a whopper of a channel. Went a whole 2-3#.

Nice fish Eddie and great bait! :D

Fresh trout is a much better bait than bunker, one of the best baitfish in my opinion. Muskie love them too!

I have nothing against using trout as bait but i think i read somewhere that you cant use the trout you catch as bait. They need to be bought and a receipt is needed. Can anyone clarify this?

A reciept is needed when Trout are under the states size limit. You can't catch an 8 inch trout and liveline it, 9 inches, you certainly can. This has been a debate on this site quite a few times. There is no rule stated anywhere that says you can't use trout for bait. As long as it's not short your good to go.

Ed is correct, as long as your Trout are 9'' or larger and you have no more then the legal limit in your possession it is a legal bait.
Mark B can chime in here.

I just can't believe you caught enough trout to use as bait, I can barely catch enough to eat in trout season! Awesome job and in the words of Cleo McDowell... THIS IS AMERICA, JACK!

Nice kitties FE. I wanna do this catfizzzzzz thang with you in the near future. You're locked in! Making bait is almost as fun turning them into double digit sized fish. Did it this past week with porgies and cow stripers!

I'll bring a nice sharp knife to dispatch them trout-skis swiftly!

Catfish taste better than trout.... IMHO.

It's a win win !! Catch trout cool, catch big catfish, cool. I thought it was illegal at first to do the trout thing but it is legal, kinda nice to see so many trout holding over into August.
