Re: Fish ID?

IMHO,Its a Tomcod...

Nope,, you guys are right.. Didn't see the dark "thumbprint" on the side, I guess it is a little haddock.. In the bay??? wow..

The whole cod family looks pretty similar, but I think only the Haddock has the thumbprint mark..
Odd fish for the bay.. I one heard of a guy flounder fishing in cold weather that caught a lumpfish near the ammo pier, but a haddock in the Bay???.. pretty cool, but I wouldn't put the Cod rods into your 14 footer just yet. lol... bob

Looked it up, does seem to be a juvenile Haddock.
Good news, we might have to ditch dogfish for fish n chips and get some Haddock here boyz :)

cool that its in the bay, but its just an oddity, not a sign of things to come.. NJ is pretty much at the very southern edge of the range of the haddock..You'll see them here and there, we've all seen a few taken on head boats among ling, hake, etc, but its just too far south for a real fishery...These are fish of the Gulf of Maine. Georges Bank, and in the waters off Mass.. We will be lucky to get a fair Cod/Pollack fishery back.. any Haddock will be a bonus, but I won't hold my breath... Biggest I have ever seen one in NJ was one about 15 inches caught on the Dauntless last year ling fishing.. I remember the guy did keep it after asking the mate if it was ok... bob

June 3, 2012, while on a non-sponser party boat out of point, fishing northern mudhole deep wreck. I think around 35 or so were caught in about a 1/2 hour period. Had 3 myself, were all in the 3-4 pound bracket, strange.
