I'm thinking about buying a kayak and I was wondering what makes a good yak? I have a rowboat with motors and fish finders so I'm not looking to have an elaborate setup. Seems like the storage on most yaks is useless so what matters or doesn't matter in a fishing kayak?.

I second Dan's post about Jon over at "The Kayak Fishing Store". Jon is a great guy and will with out a doubt help you get into a great kayak. I recently purchased the redfish 12 and I'm quite satisfied with it thus far. Jon will give you his honest opinion on what to do and not to do as far as rigging is concerned with a yak unlike other guys who will just try to sell you anything under the sun to make a buck. Good luck and when you pick up a yak give me a shout to throw a line.

What's your price range? What kind of fishing? Lakes rivers both? As far as storage it can be useful in different situations. Some have enough rooms to store rods and a lot of gear. Sit in or sit on top?

Well probably lakes and reservoirs. Don't wanna spend to much cuz I already have a real fishing rig. Not sure if its better to sit in or on top.

If you don't want to spend an arm and a leg then look at Dicks. I just got a sit on top for 449. Its 12', came with an anchor, 3 rod holders, front n rear storage. Good starter yak.

Jon was @ Overpeck today showing three possible customers his yaks w/small motors. Nice guy and extremely helpful.

Sit on top is really the way to go. I started off with a 10ft sit on top and sold it for a 12ft sit on top. Check out Craig's list there are some pretty good deals.

I was just at the Kayak Fishing Store a week or two ago.
I bought a roof rack for my car. I'll definitely return there to buy my next kayak.

That guy Jon is very knowledgeable and helpful. He will install any accessories you buy with your kayak, too.

KFS rocks...Spoke to him before his seminar at the fly fishing show....
I bought mine from them about 7 yrs ago when it was called kayak fishing stuff....I went with a 12' liquid logic manta ray..( sit on top )

Some sit on tops have scupper holes in the seat area, which i find unneaded..
So i used a high quality caulke and sealed just that one scupper hole....
I also sealed the ones in the open back storage area....I ocassionally open those up if go in the lower tidal delaware where you can get 4-5 foot boat wakes, but most fishing lakes and resies are fine with just the two open scuppers by your feet....

I find it a must to seal the seat scupper, especially for early season trips(unless you like a wet ass)....anchor cleat, recessed rod holders behind you, and one in front and ur good to go....Some insist on a rudder but removed mine yrs ago and its fine.....Kayaks rock:D

Just an FYI.. KFS usually refers to kayakfishingstuff.com which, i believe, use to sell kayaks and gear but they went belly up. They still, imo, have the best message board forum in regards to anything and everything kayak fishing.
