Im planning on going cod fishing next weekend and I am unsure on where to go, at first I was planning on going to montauk or ri but after reading reports, I hear the boats on the south shore have been doing ok. What do you guys think?

Go North to Mass. on the Helen H, stay away from NJ and the South Shore.

Just my opinion.

Keep letting the rock hoppers net fish. It's o.k.. for us recreational it just don't matter.
$ big business = no fish to be found for the little guys.
We are out own worst enemies.
Soon fish will only be found in cans.

COD opens April 16th in Mass. So don't go there next week.

While you are correct this is basically CT, RI, NY waters not so much Mass. The major rec boats that target the cod in Mass start their cod season out front on April 16th when those waters open which is what these posts are referring too.

Sometimes you gotta read between the lines.

Georges Banks and South is open, there is no need to travel to green harbor where they go and fish Jeffery's, Stellwagon Banks and the like...

Those are the areas closed.

Thanks for the clarification. just let me know when you find a rec boat going out there from Mass. Is the Flemish Cap open too?

The Helen H... :) I wouldn't know about the cap as that is Canadian waters.

Anytime you need a clarification you just ask snookums! :)

LOL on the Flemish Cap.

I know that Eastmans in NH is starting on 3/29 but they will be targeting Haddock and Pollack as Cod is closed until 4/16. Tuna.com and Relentless are starting early as well.

Walsh's American Classic in Lynn, MA was fishing South of the 42 line so you could keep Cod but as far as I know he isn't going out any more.

That is what I read on the Fisharks site. The American Classic boat is going to Capt Jimmy's brother and Jimmy is buying a boat for a gambling operation. Not sure if the AC will continue to fish. This is a big loss but time marches on. I think Eastman's may try to fill some of the gap.

Little history on the Flemish Caps. It's an area that's actually outside of Canada's 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone. It's made up of warm waters from the North Atlantic currents and the cold waters from the Labrador currents. An area once known for it's outstanding swordfish, halibut, scallop and redfish and yellowtail flounder and palice. The area has suffered severe damage due to overfishing.
