Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril

With March getting closer I know there is a very good amount of bait fisherman on this site wondering about where we are going to go for herring this year for Merill Creek, Round Valley and Spruce Run. With the amount of traffic that this site gets I am pretty sure we can use this as a platform to show current businesses or maybe a new one that it could be a nice opportunity if taken seriously. Sportsmans Rendevous is a good location but their hours are terrible for a fisherman looking for bait. If they could open at 6am latest 7am (maybe only during peak season) I think that they would be a possibility not sure if they carry herring though (thats a must). I would love to check out Kollmer Power Equipment in Flemington and give them my business but I havent heard much out of them. Bottom line is that there is a huge void in hunterdon somerset and lower warren counties with 3 major lakes that get a ton of anglers and we have really no choices, not a single1!! If everyone posts on here that they would support any business that would make a real effort in this area I think it may help. We have to show them its a viable business. Were all looking to spend our money somewhere lets hope someone steps up
I know that peak season end of april - early july I'm good for about 5 dozen herring a week and we fish march-december. Lets see what we can do guys Gary |
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
It doesn't take much. All we need is a deli or hardware store to carry 1 tank full of herring. I've never fished with herring but still there has to be somebody out there that can help out the NJ ANGLERS. Does anybody no a small business owner that has room for a Herring tank??? :o :D

Been going to B. and B. in Netcong for better than 12 years now. May have to drive a bit but there are stores around Lake Hopatcong also.
You can always get your bait air packed the night before, just gotta keep 'em cool. |
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
I'm ALL FOR THAT !!!! Need somebody in the area to fill the void I live forty five minutes south of the valley let alone SR or MC I used to fish the first two quite a bit and now at a major loss as i do fish herring at both almost exclusively but if no one nearby decides to carry them i guess those lakes will be out of the question for the most part. SUCKS living south of parkway bridge if you fish freshwater!!!!!!!

Highway Sport shop on 31 just north of Washington carries bait fish and a good line of tackle and info. Kollmer Equipment is also a great place and I think Bob is planning on carrying herring but they haven't so far, they do have a great selection of tackle. Both are a little out of the way for SR, RV, and MC.

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
Just a question. Would 5" to 6" trout work as good as herring?
|
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
Try keeping them alive !!! Plus when is Musky hatchery open to buy them.
|
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
there used to be a place off of rt 23 where the bait tanks were outside and it was help yourself 24/7. there were cameras recording, and you had to fill out on the envelope what you were buying and your license plate. very handy. too bad the boat repair place it was at closed.
but maybe someone could do something like that. i would do it in my front yard, but my wife would not be pleased, and i am not very conveniently located. |
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
Andy I have kept them alive at home in a large chest freezer with filtration and a spray bar for a few weeks. Havent really been freshwater fishing the last few years, but I used to take them out and put them in a igloo cooler with a portable livewell system and they always seemed to stay alive.
As for the Musky hatchery, I used to buy them at like 50 to 100 at a clip. But not lately |

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
I'm sure the can be kept alive in a fish tank in a cool garage or bsmt.
I catch huge killies in may by a creek near my house and set up a 20 gallon tank and they last all summer. As long as the watet is cool and properly air rated I don't see a problem. |
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
I guess it all depends upon the profit to be made. Doubt it very much the person is going to sell herring to break even. Plus would have to open early and close later.

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
There is a place on 183 in Netcong that carries herring, fatheads and everything else you would need

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
For u fisherman in the West Milford, Newfoundland and Oak Ridge area there is a fairly new bait shop on Rte 23 In New Foundland 2727 rte 23 Ph# 973 545 2336..Opens 5 am Sat & Sun..6 am weekdays.. They are on East bound side..I Fished catskill reservoirs for over 40 years b4 Herring was avaiable up there at Pepacton, Cannonsville, Roundout,& Asokan reservoirs, we trucked bait up there and did just what u fellow are doing good Ice chest bore a hole through lid run the airator hose thru the hole..Secret is keep water cool and good oxegyn flow can keep alive a long time..Also don't try to carry to many when u fish that way..Also hang on to the dead and dying in seperat container all else fails dead bait works..You'll learn the tricks when u have too. Can't beat herring for trout bait..But shiners do work..Specially in spring early cool conditions..Good luck BTW..Early in the year we used to get our bait the night b4 keep them cool and airated..Most survived the next day... tite lines guys....Slider

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
I live near Fins and Furs bait shop on rt23 (mentioned in the last post). It's a small shop and is still trying to get stocked up with a good selection but the owner is cool and it should be a great place, especially for those who fish the Newark Watersheds in the future.
If you go back to the original topic and see all the discussion it really does show what a huge gap is left now that Lebanon Bait is no longer around. I grew up in that area and have gone there forever, they were great - sorry to see them gone. Hopefully someone opens a shop in that vicinity. |

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
There is nobody in the area of the North Branch. Lebenon was the perfect place. Now closed. Efingers opens too late. There used to be a place in Manville but I do not remember where it was. Some side street. Netcong is too far to go.

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
Most places, including leb. b&t get their herring from lake hopatcong(usually dows).....They don't start showing up in the lighted herring traps until then....So some years they are available sooner than others like last yr...This yr. was a bit more like a "normal" winter ,so third week of april sounds rite..;)

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
Nice to see a new shop open up in time for the season... Good luck to them...
|
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
I checked with the NS tackle shop on Rt 31 next to BJ' in Flemington. They will have herring. The bad news is they are not open until 900AM and are closed on Sunday.

Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
Saw a show recently on wfn about vertical jigging lakers and browns around the lake Michigan area. Far as smallies go, there's a plethora of colors and presentations out there. Why not try an alternative method?
Not to mention sales of artificials would bring in more profits............ |

It's all GOOD !!! I'M one of those HERRING GUYS!!!! LOL I fish lures too but
at certain lakes IMO nothing like a nice big psycho herring doing the dance! Hope everyone supports the new kid on the block so to say by buying both! Glad to see someone opened up cause the smaller places are a thing of the past and all the generic sporting good stores all carry the same stuff. |
Re: Support this post to get someone to carry Herring for Round Valley,Spruce Run, Merril
Don't get me wrong, I def use bait now and then, just keepin the thread goin.
The show made me think of Merril Creek and Round Valley with the lakers they were haulin out left and right with a brown or two mixed in. :) I know theres plenty of smallies in there as well which will readily hit on a variety of lures. Can't comment on the wipers in spruce since I've never fished for them but I'm hopin to change that this year. |
