South Branch monsters

2 Attachment(s)
Hit the south branch with outofline today for few hours and fishing was great with outofline getting his PB brown and loosing his Pb rainbow. We starting picking away at a few nice fish in the 16"range then headed down stream and found a honey hole.Outofline hooked into a good fish that didnt fit in the net and ended up flippin out and away it was an easy 5lb+bow.A few cast later hooks into giant that made a great fight running up and down stream after 10 min or so the beast is half in and half out of the net, this one didnt get away. The big brown measured 28" and weighed excactly 10lbs

Hell of a catch. Thats a monster brown. Congrats to Matt. Trout anglers are going to be DROOLING over this fish for a while. And those silly fly guys, well they'll never get a fish like that.

Occasionally, the angler with the most natural presentation on the fly rod will get one in NJ. Well, as long as they don't walk through to many holes on the way out........................:D

True dat, most fly guys are not stealthy and spook most fish.

Hey Shucker! Nice fish there....Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your great post.

Interesting general comment though with the NJ fly guys not being stealthy and walking in the holes..Didn't know that. I rarely fish in NJ for trout. By rarely I mean 2 or 3 times in the past 30 years. I only fly fish for trout in NY and rarely see anyone fishing where I go. When I do see another fly guy up there, they are generally respectful and quiet if wading in the stream.

Again, congratulations on that nice fish. A beauty by any standard, especially in the winter!

Where you fish in NY the water is a lot bigger, so you can wade out far and have room to back cast without catching a tree or a bush. Around here (NJ) I see fly guys all time standing in 4 feet of water and casting to 2 feet of water.
Now I'm no fly fishing expert by any means, but I've caught a Trout or two and mostly they are in a deep hole or a deep fast run on a small river. These holes can easily be found by looking for the fly guy standing in them:mad:

And while fishing in NJ TCA's I've been harassed by fly guys telling me spinning rods are not allowed. When I point out to them that yes they are allowed the next comment I hear is "Well they shouldn't be".

And Leif, I'm not busting you, just MOST of the fly guys in NJ.

And BTW nice Brown there Matt.:)

Right. Fly guys never get fish like that ;) . Or maybe they just don't post their pictures as openly to the public.

And you should be thanking those fly guys. It was their shop that stocked those fish.

I was waiting for one of you guys to pop in:p

Re: South Branch monsters

Thanks guys! But, WOW! Just read all the BS sh$tstorm this caused on another website! That fish has been in that stream for a while! Regardless of where it was stocked, who stocked it, it was landed! I guess guys with spinning rods should be kept one little section of stream or the ponds they stock. They seem to think that fish wasn't worthy enough to be caught on spinning rod. If the fly guys knew what i was using, it's similiar to the paterns they use, just in a different manner! I have nothing against fly fishing, but to be bashed is just plain childish! Bunch of HATERS!
Yes, I kept the fish. I've been fishing NJ waters for trout for over 20 years, and never came across a fish like that. And yes.....it was delicious! It was my choice to keep it. NJ is a put and take fishery, unless you belong to club where you PAY extra to catch fish like that! I've put in a lot time on public streams, going off the beaten path, and I got lucky!
It is what it is!
If anyone wants to bash me from here, or another website, here's my cell # 732-718-7107.
Matt

And to the rest of you guys that I know and have fished with, thanks again! Now I have to watch my back when fishing the S. Branch...I might get beaten up by a bunch of guys with fly fishing rods!

Jigman13 02-06-2013 06:24 PM

Re: South Branch monsters

Screw the haters. That's a lifetime NJ fish dude. No explanation needed. I would like to hear more about the battle you did with that fish, though! Time in = results... Simple as that. You earned it and deserve to do whatever you please with the catch. I would've kept her too!

Again, congrats on a fine specimen.

Re: South Branch monsters

GetANet: I hear ya bro! A guy can't catch a trophy fish without being picked apart. I did nothing illegal, fished within regulations, and still.....they HATE! Those guys on the other website are THE BIGGEST HATERS! This aint Montana or Wyoming, it's NJ. There's no secret holes, and it's put and take. That's where my money goes. I don't keep everything. I enjoy getting out, checking out new spots, and if I catch a fish, it's a BONUS! This one just happened to one of the larger ones caught recently! Again, nothing against the FF guys, but I'm confident enough that I could out fish them! More often than not, when i talk to FF guy, and ask how they're doing, the majority of the time I get "nothing". Now I'll fish that same stretch, and pull out fish right in front of them and I get a funny look? I'm just gonna keep doing my thing, and that's catching trout, along with fishing with good peeps!

Shucker: Thanks for your help getting that monster on the bank! It's always a pleasure fishing with you. Whether it's trekking a mile or two off the beaten path in the spring, or freezing our a$$es of in the middle of winter, WE CATCH TROUT...and Quality trout!

FastEddie: YOU know I'm a MANIAC :D , and these guys got me fired up!

Tight lines guys! There's still BIG trout out there!
