I like to hand tie my own on CM Tackle jigheads.he uses an owner hook.To me its all about the HOOK.Color doesnt matter to me as much as action and the rite hook but I mostly fish white. I rarely even fish a teaser above my bucktails while flukin.Big fish like the bucktail.

Re: Favorite Bucktail
hi lo chartruse spro with 4"swimming mullet (pearl) on both, 3/8ths up top and i dont jig anything bigger than 4 oz on the bottom, ill drag big smelt with a 6" cuttle strip behind if the drift is too fast. id have to say 75% of my keepers last year hit the top jig.

Re: Favorite Bucktail
I never seem to keep one long enuff to have a favorite. Catch more on the teaser anyway.
Got some home made purple ones I can't wait to try. Is it May yet? |

Last year I purchased some 4oz custom jigs in guppy style from a local jig maker. They worked out well. Chart/White with a bluefish belly strip & stinger hook got me a pb of 8# at the rocks in early August.

Re: Favorite Bucktail
had the most success with plain round bucktails in white or chartreuse....
favorite is any one I make myself...nothing beats catching fish with your own stuff |
Re: Favorite Bucktail
1 oz to 3 oz glow white powder coated and clear coated twice with over sized glow eyes. Owner 5/0 to 6/0 hook with chart or white natural bucktail, not synthetic. Spro is good but the paint chips very easily, and the tail is not tied tight enough so the hair loss is quick. They offer every paint color in glow so you can make whatever combo of glow heads and tail feather you choose.

Re: Favorite Bucktail
A buddy of mine makes my bucktails for me...he uses the guppy mold previously mentioned...his bucktails boxed a lot of fluke for me last summer.
Also agree with the teaser comments - sometimes that's all they want but most of my bigger fish were on the bucktail Al |

MVP, Do it mold gives you the size for eyes and hooks that fits the jig you pour. Although they are stick ons, and need to be clear coated to secure the eyes, the recommended size for the mold up to 1.5oz is very small as are the hooks. As for the eyes I ordered 2 sizes larger then stated and they came out well. For larger hooks or other brands this may require alterations to the mold. The eyes glow just as much as the powder coat "looks like a night light in the bathroom." The nice thing is that if your convinced that the glow is attracting fish you can coat them any color in the glow powder, but i do find the white and chart to be the brightest. I will email you a pic if you want tomorrow. I just got sick of loosing the hair and paint on the spros after minimal use and now i can bounce a tighter wrapped product for less then half the price!

Send me a pictures of your bucktails. I bought one of those spro type molds 3 years ago for 3-5 oz. I did not like the hook that they recommended for that mold as it was a huge Mustag hook that looked more like a shark hook to me. As you mentioned I would have had to alter the mold to have it fit a Gami style hook. I decided to just return mold rather than screw it up. |
Re: Favorite Bucktail
