Tog Poll: Do U Snafu?

I usually fish a 1 hook "Belmar Rig" but have been seen using the deadly Snafu.

Re: Tog Poll: Do U Snafu?

i have snafud in the past but it alwasy seems to eventually twist up on me after a few fish. I tried the slider on saturday but did not have great luck, did better with the snafu although uncle Al next to me had his limit in 2 hours using the slider, i think i slid the hook down incorrectly. oh well thats whats great about togging always something to learn

One of the reasons I've gotten away from using the snafu is because of comments I got while fishing in RI.

Jerry,

Can you show us how to tie that slider rig?

Is it basically a 1 hook rig with a free sliding hook between the snelled hook and your loop?

Re: Tog Poll: Do U Snafu?

Snafu for a BIG, Whole whitelegger. Caught the biggest silver eel I ever saw on that last week:eek:

Joey - I notice the snafu seems to twist up more when I bring them up WITHOUT a fish - so If I'm not getting a good bite on a single hook with greenie, I might go to a snafu with whitelegger - no bite then it's all twisted:mad:

I'm thinking about trying a slider. As I've said before - in the past whatever I was using is usually NOT what they're biting on. This year I'm changing that.

Any rig that catches fish or increases your catch is not "stupid"

Snafu rig: Snell a hook at both ends of a piece of leader material & tie a drooper loop in the middle of the leader. The rig is used to fish a whole crab with two hooks in it.

I use the "belmar" rig because it's the only one I can consistantly tie myself without messing it up.

Hit search, type snafu rig, look in the blackfish help thread if this cut and paste does not work

Lots of ways to rig up. I generally make a loop at the end of my mono leader about 10-12" long and tie two regular overhand knots aka Surgeon's loop. http://www.animatedknots.com/surgeon...matedknots.com

Slip sinker on by placing end of loop through eye of sinker then around bottom and tighten.

I fish with my own presnelled hooks and snafu rigs which have a loop in them:
Attachment 5814

You basically "pinch" or fold the line of the Surgeon's Loop about 3" above the sinker:
Attachment 5815

This now formed loop goes inside the loop of your presnelled hook or rig:
Attachment 5816

Now run hook(s) through the pinched loop and pull snug while still holding on:
Attachment 5817

Take sinker while holding on to the loop and make an overhand knot around it with sinker&Surgeon's loop:
Attachment 5818

Tighten and done.

Height of rig will depend on where you're fishing. Sometimes higher is necessary.

One of many ways to rig up. Try a few and go with what produces for ya:cool:

He caught over 30 keepers this fri sat and sun... But am i sure they were all chin hooked and he wouldnt have caught nutin with 1 Hook or a snafu and he really is a terrible blackfisherman who only catches because he uses a different rig ...Never said Stellie wasn't a good blackfisherman, just the opposite IMO...just stated what I saw. I've used it once, definitely increases hook up ratio... but I like a snafu rig, I can present a crab most naturally....and I hate change:cool:

i have fished with him alot over the last 5 years

That is simply not true

1 of two ways... put a hook on the leader and snell a hook on the end along with a loop on the other end... you have a hook with the leader just thru the eye of the hook and one snells. the other is free to slide.. or you can go a little farther and snell the slide hook onto the leader.. either way would work i would believe..

Thanks.

Does the free sliding hook point in the same direction as the snelled hook?

Geeze Jerry, I used a smiley face...it was half a joke...but in truth he did hook more than 1/2 his fish under the chin...no way is this a slight to Stellie...you know me, you know who I think are good fisherman and who are hacks.

I know Petey... no hard feelings man... pierre i know you love da snafu

But by putting up it was cheating and 90% of his fish?

look at the landslide it created (invited on the next guys post)

No big deal just had to state a few facts and why we use it thats all to clear it up thats all.

Are both hooks baited with seperate pieces, same piece or sometimes 1 way sometimes the other?

Russ,

I use the Belmar rig too. Both the snafu and the slider can be used with it...loop to loop connection.

Got Bottom? 11-24-2009 06:27 PM

Re: Tog Poll: Do U Snafu?

prefer to use the "belmar" rig being i'm from belmar and thats what i was taught to use. but all these rigs have different applications for me.

one hook for basic, "i just wanna go out and fish" days.

slider rigs when i'm using Asian crabs or the tog want cut up pieces. like using it for whole greenies or small whites cut in half so each half's got a hook in it.

snafu rig for using big whites whole or big greens whole

actually never really use the snafu anywhere as much as i use the one hook or slider. like jmurr said the snafu's do tend to tangle up more, especially when its a picky bite and you gotta wait for your bites

I usually use a single but would like to know what a true slider looks like if it any different from what i use.
I snell a hook, and then slide another hook down before tying a nail knot. Is this the right way or am i missing something.

That's it, except I don't understand the nail knot. Most people tie some sort of loop on the end of the leader.

WOW! ....and to think, not even half the $hit talking in this thread would have been TYPED, if ya had to say it face to face.

.......and for the record, I'm such a goober, I still have Virginia style, single hook, red bead rigs in my tackle bag........

bigfishtale 11-25-2009 04:21 PM

Re: Tog Poll: Do U Snafu?

If you tie the snafu correctly, with the right stiff stick leader, it will not twist.

To me the slider twists alot more after some use. For smaller baits it seems pretty good. Still love the snafu though. Just aheads up that either will negate a world record fish as there are two hooks on it ;)
