Well, that's it
I give up--out of 7 scheduled trips to the blue water, only made it out twice. Next Tues. trip is a no go--what with 55kt wind & 19' seas forecast. Just as well I guess- no tuna or at least so scattered with even temps all over(now in the high 50's) but I feel for the captains who would regularly go----so much lost revenue...Let's all hope the fan blows it's ass off over the winter and shuts down for next year's season. This year was just a disaster for the off-shore fishery...I'm basically referring to the PB's that primarily chunk & not those who drag plastic, etc. early on. Gonna dream about next year & put my gear to sleep for a long winter's nap!!!!

Re: Well, that's it
The jamaica finally caught up a bunch of nice longfins on there last trip out. They added another trip leaving next Sunday.

Re: Well, that's it
Shame that another tuna season is almost behind us just hope
For next year |
Re: Well, that's it
June through early August was excellent for the tuna fishing, including outstanding bigeye fishing and some jig action. Sept onward sucked once the first tropical system passed near us.
It’s been a long time since we had a real eddy slide south down the line from the NE canyons in the fall. |
Re: Well, that's it
Don't apply the moth balls too early...rumor has it, there might be something brewin for the 20th...

Re: Well, that's it
Hey shorts, haven't put my toys to bed yet---hope you're right...
John D.---I know BUT I don't do trolling anymore---not mating on a private ride any more.....then we usually tended towards the southern spots...hardly ever got up to the "Lindy"... |
Re: Well, that's it
Personally, I love the fall chunk and jig bite more than anything but have
To adapt to the fishery. IMO, I still believe it to be thriving but is 100% dependent upon the water quality on the edge, which has been poor the past 5-6 years for most of the fall. |

Re: Well, that's it
I've been trying to do my first tuna trip for like 4 years and every single time i get canceled by weather if that makes you feel any better hahaha
|
Re: Well, that's it
Chrisper, I can feel for you but you've gotta book more than 1 trip a year(if you don't)...at least 1 out of 6 gets blown out each year. This year was a disaster---out of 7, only made 2...fan always seemed to be on high on scheduled trips....Let's hope next year is MUCH better...

Re: Well, that's it
Chris just jump on with us July/Aug next year. 45' of fishing machine, lots of chow and hopefully kill boxes stacked with tuna and tile!
|
Re: Well, that's it
Excellent...sounds like a good plan...I assumed Chris was talking PB's but you know what Benny Hill said about "assuming"!!!! As I said, let's hope next year is MUCH better---catch 'em up guys!!!!!

For the Gambler, it doesn't make sense to switch to offshore trips in the middle of the summer. We have a good summer biz and wouldn't want to mess with that. Also, most of the tuna that were taken in the summer months were on the troll --not so easy for us. It was just a tough season --the toughest I've seen since the Gambler began running canyon trips (almost 30 years). Thank God for the mahi. And strange that all those giant squid were around --never saw them like that. From everything I heard, even the longliners did not catch tuna (they did okay on swords.) It appears that the weather pattern had pushed the gulf stream way off this year. 2017 was similar --but better fishing. I thought 2016 was a very good season. We would have liked to make one more --our best trip last year was November 15th. I think we had over 30 tunas on that trip, yellows and longfin. But continually canceling trips has gotten to be a drag --especially for our young office manager, Jillian. I would like to thank Chuck and Shorts and Joe and Chas... and all our regular canyon warriors for not giving up and making the best out of every trip. Next year will be an awesome season. I believe it! |
Re: Well, that's it
Very well said bobby, there was a great
Troll bite offshore in June, in July August And September we were fishing inside The canyons and then venturing offshore In the evening to try to catch a sword or Perhaps a few tunas. The canyons were void of Tuna for the most part, as far as an eddy, we had a textbook One come in with great white marlin fishing but no tunas As far as October, the weather was horrendous We cancelled 25 overnighters for weather And for slow fishing, I like you are hoping This was an enomale and better days are Ahead. While I feel the pain of the guys on the forum, let’s Not forget, the folks who truly depend on the Income from this fishery. Party boats, charter boats Fuel man, ice man, tackle shops, and all the support staff Here’s to a happy and healthy holiday season to All on the site, and to a great 2019 |
Re: Well, that's it
It figures I would pick this year to be my first tuna outing. Hoping next year is better!
