Macs and Whiting
I wanna smoke some macs and whiting for the holidays. What boats are sailing 3to9 trips.

Re: Macs and Whiting
Better reset your time machine for 1990 at the very least!

Re: Macs and Whiting
I hope your referring to Macanudos and White Owls.........otherwise you might be disappointed! Those fisheries are long gone at least in this neck of the woods but your post certainly brings back memories. Two more fisheries that couldn't possibly be destroyed which were due to over-harvest by commercials and policy decisions of our inept government. JR's 3-9 is your best bet!

Re: Macs and Whiting
Sounds like maybe we will get a shot a mackerel this year.
It doesn't always happen though..... there will be no 3-9 boats. |

Re: Macs and Whiting
I think the Palace out of Hoboken and Sea Pidgeon out of the Amboys will be running for them too. Maybe the Delmar and Lazy Bones or perhaps the Sunbeam may all switch over.
Or just hit Long Branch fishing pier in January. They are all good for night whiting. Quote:

Re: Macs and Whiting
Go up to New Hampshire in the summer or invent a time machine

I DESPISE govt regulations on just about any fishery, but it would not break my heart to see a moratorium on Whiting so they can recover.. Do netters really make any money catching and selling 8 inch Whiting?????bob |

Whiting have rebounded very well in the New England states I just think they migrated up there and dont come to NJ anymore. Also not positive but believe the OP was being sarcastic |

$8 for a Whiting?... yikes... |
Re: Macs and Whiting
This September, Macs were flying over the side of the newly-rebuilt pier at Eastport, Maine. Reminded me of the old days on a partyboat here in NJ. Maybe they will show up here. The Sea Hunter had a few on one of the bass jigging trips.

Re: Macs and Whiting
Hey Frank the Delmar did not run 3-9 Al Gable was to sleeping by 8:30. Quite a character Gotta Get Em. Worked his boat as a 12-15 year old summertime with mate Frank. Bait boy and cleanup. Loved the Ling/ Whiting/ Mac combo trips with burlap bags hanging from the rails. Ambrose/ Scotland grounds

Re: Macs and Whiting
Gotta believe I would head to New Hampshire for the Whiting ?????? Did very well up there this year. But not exactly a day trip.
|
Re: Macs and Whiting
The Super Cat and Sea Fox out of AH are both running 3-9 trips. Hop on, they have heated rails for the cold nights.
|
Re: Macs and Whiting
Guys were catching mackerel from the sandy hook beaches recently. With big hickory shad mixed it. Perhaps that's a sign they'll be here??
|
Re: Macs and Whiting
i was thinking the Happy or the reliable, they both fish the Magic hour trip.
|
Re: Macs and Whiting
My father loved winter fishing more than summer. He crabbed summers and we fished winters. Cod was his God.
I remember the burlap sacks tied to the rails very well. This is a real stroll down a fond memory lane. I think the Zephyr out of Bayonne may switch over soon too and hit Scotland and fish in the shadows of Ambrose Tower. Quote:

Re: Macs and Whiting
Once I threw a burlap sack full of whiting in the trunk of my car. Just once. Almost had to get rid of the car it stank so bad.

Burlap bags , whiting , Scotland and Ambrose lightships , and big smiles on all the old timers faces , nice post !

Re: Macs and Whiting
Definitely fond memories here. My first time fishing on a party boat as a kid was for macks out of Sheepshead Bay. I caught 8 that day, brought home in my burlap bag. I remember my Mom cleaning them in the kitchen sink, and she broiled them for dinner that evening.
As for whiting, I’ve actually seen a few more come up on ling trips. All have been small. |
