Fascinating. The state F&G does a great job.

What strikes me odd, is why I don't catch more pike at Spruce Run.

That's a lot of fish, yet I can't seem to find them there.

That's not so many catfish, yet I can ALWAYS count on catching catfish there.
Most of the people fishing from the pier and shoreline are catching catfish, also.

My individual style of fishing must not lend itself well to catching pike. I don't know.

As a serious question since I know you worked for CT, then why are they getting pike fry from NJ?

It's not all even exchanges... I forget what Craig told me but I'm not sure if in 2013 we got anything but the salmon from outside. All of these fish are provided at no charge to neighboring states as part of an ongoing fish exchange that has been in place for many years. Most of the cool and warm water programs started in New Jersey with eggs and fry from PA and NY. It's sort of a pay back for when we got help and a pay it forward for when we may need help from other states. These arrangements may very well come into play to help NJ get past the furunculosis problem at pequest.

I forget what the percentage is, but theres ALOT of loss out of the stockings, u gotta remember most of these fish are fingerlings or less, thats the size of the herring and shiners we use as bait, easy meal for game fish......If you look at the species lists there are sizes listed, usually advanced fingerlings have the best chance......as far as muskie go I watched a stocking at LH and they were roughly 12" which is a great size to stock, I bet they have 80% or better on those making it thru the year.....My only gripe is wheres the TRUE STRAIN stripers for NJ, PA has em I want em in NJ really bad

x100 on the job that Craig and team do at the hatchery. If you've never been over there or talked to any of the workers, you'd be amazed how a little state like ours has the best warmwater hatchery in the Northeast. Thank you guys for everything you do.

And Jim is exactly right. We often wind up with a surplus and some of these fish are picked-up by other states when they are very small and raised at their hatcheries. I forget Craig's exact words, but it was something to the effect of helping out and never knowing when it's going to be us that needs the favor. Lots of things can go wrong raising so many different species, and the neighboring states depend on each other to fill the gaps.

It's the other way around. If you read the stocking reports it looks like NJ is getting pike from CT and MA.

Not so... From The NJ F&W 2013 Broodstock collection report...

"Over the winter, we also received requests from the Connecticut Division of Fish and Wildlife for 100,000 swimup northern pike fry"

We supplied Budd Lake source fry to CT in 2013...

Can you post a link to the report? I'd like to read it. The one skunk posted said that we got 135,000 pike fry from CT, maybe they want to try the Budd strain in a CT lake and the CT fish in NJ. The Budd pike are definitely different than the CT pike. I like the coloration of the Budd pike but the ones in CT are bigger, but that's probably due to the CT lakes having better habitat and forage base.

Matt, you are absolutely a pike master so no disrespect but I think the report says what we supplied (stocked or gave) so it was 135K going to CT. Based on what I've seen you catch, it certainly seems like they have some awesome fish there...
