Bayshore early spring stripers are easy to catch, IF you are fishing where they happen to be.. You should have no problem at Keansburg, Union Beach, Leonardo, or further east at Cliffwood to Keyport... We used to catch them a short cast off the beach when I lived in Union Beach in the 80's.. back then stripers were really scarce, but they were always on the bayshore beaches in early spring.. Even in the worst years when ocean caught stripers were very hard to find.
No need to search for channels, bunker pods, or big stacks of suspended fish until later when the big bass start crashing bunker, then
its run and gun with snagged bunker, or a very fresh bunker head...

Early spring If you fish say 100 yards off the shore in the areas mentioned, perhaps 15 FOW,there are usually always stripers and flounders to be had.. I would use some broken up clams or or even fresh broken mussels tossed wround the boat , and hook bait of sandworms, or a ball of clam snot for schoolies, which will be the majority of the stripers you catch early on.. a LOT of bass are caught every year by guys shore fishing these areas with bait... If you have a boat and fish the same areas, you will most certainly find them.. Maybe not every trip out, but the bass will be there more often than not... As always, you have a much better chance of more and bigger bass, and less chance of small flounder tearing your buck each sandworms off the hook if you fish night tides.. Guys clean up some nights on worms right off shore.
Keep your eye on the reports.. I bet the first bass have already been dragged up on the sand.. If not, it will happen this weekend, or any day shortly thereafter.......

Its like chumming.. Increase the chum slick.. and then u can save a few bucks on chum.. Only have to buy one bag and use the shells... works good

btw, my post related to the bayshore spring fishery from a historical and long term perspective... I have NO idea what changes Sandy may have wrought, and perhaps the near shore environment has been so drastically altered, that my take on the subject is no longer relevant... I hope not... bob

When we were going through 10 bags of clams every other day we used to dump them in the same spot, sort of create your own little clam bed.
