...and not for nothing, after eating (legal) bluefin right off the boat I have yet to order/buy tuna of any kind since. That stuff is the food of the gods so its no wonder they're being fished so hard.

I dont know about that one - that is what the government tells us. They also tell us we overfish. It comes down to money , political lobbyist and foriegn interests. America for Sale to the highest bidder. The rules are made for big businesses and corporations - Not us - look at catch shares -

I am with Captain Ron on this

This is another reason why I only eat fish I catch... Except for sushi and Chilean Seabass cause Capt Ron hasn't figured a way to catch those locally yet! :D

Great points Capt Ron !!!!!! I think you nailed it. If only the government would let all those hard working commercial fisherman expand and increase their harvest they could provide the whole country with the bounty of our domestic seafood. If only the oppressive government would let the fish pots be placed where ever the fisherman wanted and the dragger fleet doubled in size with much larger quotas they could feed this country. That you for leading the railing cry to get the government out of the fish management business and let the commercial fisherman get back to doing what they do best......... And that catching massive amounts of fresh fish. I will assume that most fisherman on this site will be totally agreeing with your point of view. Great to see you posting again and I hope you have a wonderful and prosperous upcoming season.

You sir are another well informed fisherman and I think it is great you are showing support for Capt Ron's post. Please help get the word out that the Government and their restrictions are stopping commercial fisherman from unrestricted harvest . I myself do not know if the should havest as much as they would want or use what ever gear during year round season . Maybe you sir could start the rallying cry of how us rec fisherman could take shorter seasons and lower quotas in order to better help the commercial sector provide all the needed domestic product. Maybe some one could have Tee shirts made with this printed on them
"You want fresh seafood"front
"We need more pots on the reefs"back
Or
"thank a dragger and his huge net for your dinner"

I poked around and found some info stating that 91% of all seafood consumed in the US is imported.

Hard to believe but then think of all the landlubbers that don't live near the ocean and have no clue what truly fresh fish is. All those millions of shrimp cocktails ain't all coming from the Gulf.

Whatya think, Ron? Can we produce that domestically in a sustainable way?

I'm not so sure.

March in DC all you want but a centralized goverment is unresponcive to local issues. Here in Essex county people could care less about fishing let alone a beurocrat in DC.
