Was on the non sponser trip tuesday-Wednesday, started out mahi Fishing which was decent. Probably around 100 mahi on the boat. Started chunking around 6, one tuna was caught around 7 and then another around 10. A short sword was caught and a couple other hookups throughout the night but nothing landed. At sunrise two more tuna were caught on jigs. One yellowfin and one longfin.

Another disappointing tuna run. Mahi are saving the season. But the extra miles to the canyon seem a waste so far this year?

Hoping it breaks open! However, something has to change. The definition of insanity - "doing the same things over and over again with the same poor results". Dont get me wrong, there will eventually be a hot bite, but it will only a few out of dozens of trips. Apparently the commercial guys are crushing them far off shore.

Here's a barometer.........I haven't been reading too many reports from the Canyon Runner Fleet. If Adam's boys are not catching them, they are not there.

Very slow on the tuna front. We were out Tues-Wes, all the Mahi you wanted and Blue Sharks at night but no sign of Tuna. We tried a different area other than the Hudson. Only tuna we heard about was out in the deep of hudson.

We worked Lindy, stayed the night in NE corner, worked east toward the longliners and back in towards Carteret. There was another boat in Lindy that left and a boat in spencer. We all had same outcome.

Of course that's reduced time at the rail and a fuel surcharge---with no guarantee of catching....just sayin'.......

Was on a non sponsor trip Tuesday-Wednesday. There is so much red squid in the Hudson you can't get bait though them for long after 10 min. the rod tip would tell you change bait as you could see the squid hit the bait. Live squid lasted a little longer & if you needed a new bait all you had to do was drop the squid jig down wait 30 seconds for the hit & reel up a new bait with ten others following him up. Watch one guy fill half a bushel basket full with 1 jig in less than an hour. If they are there they are too well fed to bite. but mostly it was blue screen fishing.

any word out there? it looks completely un-fishable for the next 3-4 days. i was supposed to head out on a private 6 pack out of Lewe's Delaware but looks like that is getting postponed.

Sorry for the late report, but I didn't get home until late yesterday, and then had to work all day today.
I was on the Non-sponser 30 hour Tuesday/Wednesday. Ride out was nice and gentle with a bit of leftover swell. We spent the first 5 or so hours pot hopping and had some down right silly mahi fishing. Every pot was loaded up, some they chewed very well on, some not so well, but about 4:00 we hit the mother load of fish that wanted to chew. At times it seemed like the entire boat was hooked up, mostly smaller fish with just a few gaffer's mixed in, but if you were at all paying attention you had your limit of 10 with no problem. They bit the bucktail well, but most people were fishing chunks.
We went deep at sunset and with the great conditions the boat elected to drift the deep rather than anchor. Shortly after stopping 50lb class yellow was boated and everyone was hoping it was the start of good night...it was not meant to be. Throughout the night a few more larger class yellows hooked and lost, one other yellow was boated, and blue sharks were making themselves know more than a few times. After an un-eventful sunrise we made a move and even though we found breaking fish on the surface we never got one eat.
At about 9:00am the captain said we were going to try see if we could find the offshore scallop boats on the way in and see if there was anything on them. Around 10:30 we pulled up behind the first dragger and gave it a shot, it took a few minutes to get the first bite, but then we started to pick fish mainly on the jig. Over the next few hours we hit 3 or 4 boats total picking a few tuna on each until the last which was a perfect circumstance. The boat was done dragging, but still shucking and the tuna were just stacked up, and we just drifted a few hundred feet off her starboard side and really got the fish worked up on jigs. At one point I know we had at least 7 or 8 on at once. Unfortunately the fish on the scallop boats were all bluefins (apparently there have been days recently when it was all yellows, and a few days when it was mixed) but for us it was all 35"-45" bluefin. The boat kept the first 3 under brought to the boat, and then we all went into release mode. The crew did an amazing job either J-hooking out jigs with fish still in the water, or lip gaffing them at the stern door for a quick and successful release. I don't know how many fish were released but I am guessing it was in the 25-30 range with a bunch more lost to pulled hooks or broken lines. Over all it was a great trip with a fantastic start and finish with a slow night in between. The boat docked over 4 hours late to give a chance to get in on that bluefin bite.
My father's and my total for the trip was over 40 mahi between us (ORL), my father caught 2 blue sharks during the night chunk, and we each caught 2 bluefins on jigs. I was so happy seeing my father jig his first bluefin ever and he handed the fish on light tackle amazingly well. I was also lucky enough that my first bluefin was the third one to the boat, so we were able to take that fish home.

That's a good report for this season. Got to diversify...make lemonade from lemons. Good job. Thanks for reporting.

Think I remember you saying that earlier...hope you make a full recovery...at least it would appear you'll not be missing an "epic" trip given the way the tuna catching has gone so far...water is still 67*+/- out there......
