You have a fairly short run actually... Go north out of MI and start checking the rocky bottom north of asbury park to around sea bright.. You will see them pretty well on your depth finder if its a good one..They will look like small clouds just off bottom,,,

You will see other boats fishing for them out there as well, believe me.
Trigger fish out there on the rough bottom as well this time of year.. Only "problem" is you will also catch a million endangered sea bass and fluke along with your porgies...

If I had my boat out there sea searching this time of year, I would start looking at around 40-60 feet, but porgies can be caught in less than 20 feet in rocky or mussel bottom areas pretty close to the beach.. Its not a hard and fast rule, but over the years, a general assumption with porgies is that small fish tend to be in shallower water, so I would start looking deeper first.. As you pass by the other boats at a reasonable distance, look and see if you see them catching, and you will know you are in the zone.. Personally I like to drift for porgies if its not windy, and then anchor when you start catching.. If you bring along a chum pot and a few chum logs, you can keep them under the boat long term.. Also, if you find the porgies a shad dart or small bright hair jig with a tiny sliver of clam with a fresh water size spinning rod is killer for porgies, and a lot more fun than a "boat rod" and 6 ounce sinker.. Conditions have to be right for that type of fishing however. With a massive hurricane heading north, this weekend might be the last decent one for bottom fishing for a while... bob

Thanks for the help. Do you think that run north will be doable on sunday in a 23 foot center console ?

Lots of storms down south, not sure how it will affect NJ waters.. If the marine forecast is close, it will be bumpy but doable on sunday.. I defer to others more in the know than I am though, as the marine forecasts are notoriously inaccurate.. they are saying 3 to 5, but it could just as easily be 5 to 7, or 1 to 3... bob
