My bro in law headed to OBX next week with his young kids. He promised them they could go fishing from the shore/beach. Does anyone have any suggestions for tackle ? I figure I will give him my two 9 foot rods to use but have no clue about rigging. Is it kingfish/spot action now ? Is there a good B&T shop down there that I can steer him towards ? Any help would be appreciated

There are a couple tackle shops in corolla and duck. Just stop in and ask. Most likely will tell you a little piece if sand worm in a kingfish rig. Cast far out and slowly drag back. You can find spot, kingfish and croaker. Dont ignore the wash, most bites right in the wash. In you have polarized sun glasses and its is a calm day, you will see them while swimming. Pretty neat.
Last summer there were skates coming in after the wave, picking up what was stirred up and headed back out. Saw small fluke feeding a similiar way.

Good luck

Thanks for the help. I thought there was decent action in the surf for croakers/kings. I will pass the information along.

Plenty of fish right in the wash down there, spot, croaker, Sea mullet (kingfish to us...) baby black drum and pompano. Shrimp work well, as do Fish Bites strips. The Fish Bites stay on the hook really well.
All you need is a simple hi-lo rig with size 4 hooks and maybe 2 oz of lead.

Not sure how far down in the Outer Banks but last a contract accidentally cut a power cable going into some parts of OBX causing a mandatory evacuation of 20,000 people. Last I heard it was going to take a few weeks to get power back.

Corolla is safe! The outage affects Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, which are south of the Oregon Inlet. I was sweating that one out too, since I'll be going to OBX at the end of August.

a 9' rod might be a little much for kids. all you need to do is tie a high low rig with small gold hooks and throw some fishbites on there. until you can ruffle up some sand fleas which were plentiful when I was down in salvo a couple months back. 2oz max was all I need to hold bottom. weather is the biggest factor, if its calm should be pretty easy. when I was down there it was windy, everyday, all day, for a week so it was never really "kid fishable"

theres tackle shops all over the place down there and they were all really helpful with info especially when I described I was just looking to panfish with the kids.

edit: just realized I was pretty much parroting what GD said, he's spot on
