They don't seem to like squid that much. What do you recommend?

fresh clam works great but sand worms or bloods are without a doubt the best

Clams, worms, small pieces of crab, and even gulp sandworms work. I've never done too great with squid. I think the best bait is clams because they're the cheapest and work really well. Sandworms work great too, but they're too expensive for this kind of fishing.

If you you bait with clams, you have given a Porgy pretty much what it wants.. Shrimp work ok, squid,meh... Mussels are killer, worms are great, but just not required, as clams catch plenty.. Plus with clams you will catch sea bass, ling, triggers, flounder, fluke, and anything else that might be swimming around with porgies including blues and weakfish...bob

Oh yeah.. If the water is shallow enough, and the porgies are there in good numbers and are aggressive, you might take a long a light freshwater spinning rod and a handful of bright 1/4 ounce jigs, or shad darts.. add a tiny sliver of clam and watch the fireworks,, It doesn't work as well in deep water, but shad darts are killer on shallow porgies... bob
