I was going to say that the state stocks some small musky and that some musky have red fins.
But the marking under the fish's eye gives it away. I'd say it's a redfin. Congrats on your first btw.

Redfin pickerel. Probably harder to catch than a musky.

Cool. What county you catch that in? Seems as if they're a rarity these days...

Thanks for the feedback fellows. I actually caught this guy along with two others in a native brook trout stream in Passaic county. I took the pic to show my buddy that there is to many pickeral in this native stream thinking it was a chain pickeral. My original thought was man these guys being in here can't be good for the Brookies. And I went on and released it thinking it may not be the best thing for that particular stream. Then later that night going through my photos I noticed it didn't look like your average pickeral. Thanx again guys.

the redfins i've caught look more like tiny tiger musky...idk hard to say, fish color varies a lot with water clarity so the markings don't really help id the fish in this case i think.

Here are some other fish that were caught. Was a day of the elusive species.

Some nice trout ! I always thought the redfin was just that, the fins are bright red.

Definitely a redfin. They don't get very big, not too much of a threat to the trout population, and one of our rather few indigenous species. Good to see it! I haven't caught one in many years!
