I recently bought my first boat which I store at Spruce Run and have been fishing there the last few weeks with very little to show for it. I headed out this Sat around midnight. My plan was to meet my buddy around 5 am for the early morning bite but I knew I would never be able to get myself out of bed at 4 am so I decided to just pull an all nighter. Not much happening during the night hours the lake was pretty quiet. My buddy texted me around 4:45 to say he was close. Since I was all the way over by the dam when I got the text I started to make my way back to the ramp to pick him up. Of course that is when my batteries decided to fail me and I ended up using a paddle for most of the return trip. After I picked up my buddy and swapped out my two dead batteries for the two fullly charged backups in my car we headed straight to the shallow hump in the middle of the lake where I marked fish during the night. I can't believe the depth chart on navionics doesn't show this structure but it's hard tonmiss on the fish finder since the depth goes from 50' deep to less that 14'. After a bit we moved on to the rip rap between the pumphouse and far corner of the dam. That is where I hooked into this little baby hybrid. It was no trophy fish but since I had never caught a hybrid I was pretty happy.
After that we didn't have much luck. The fish were not as active at dawn as other days I have been there. We headdd back to the launch around 9:30. I wasn't ready to give up so on my way out I parked in the lot by Spruce Run creek and managed to land a decent LmB from the bank. After that I called it a day, headed home and spent the rest of the day at the pool lounging and teaching my son to swim. It was a perfect day!

Congratulations on your first Hybrid Striper. There's many more where that came from.
SR was really dead last night. I didn't land a single bass, although I did catch a few catfish. I wasn't the only one having a tough time. Other anglers were conjecturing it had something to do with the barometric pressure, the moon cycle, or the herring. Maybe a combination of all three.

My first hybrid was a little one like that, and I felt great respect for the fish, too. Believe me, many and much larger await, if you put in the time and use your head.

Starting off slow with that future trophy :p. Congrats on the first one, they are an addictive species to target and like Eddie said, wait until a 25" drags you around the lake!

First off congrats on your first hybrid & go Cougars! (Born in Cranford). Go shallow! If your lure isn't hitting land once in a while go shallower untill it does. I did well at Spruce in the yak Saturday night from 12 -3am.I got there 2 late and the bite was already going on. 5 hybrids & 4 LG mouth from 3lbs to 4 1/2lbs. Watch out! These guys are swimming heroin! Once you start you can't stop! Lol!

The fact that we both were out there from 12-3 AM the same night and you killed it while I got skunked tells me I have a lot to learn about that place. Mind me asking what lures/baits the larrys and hybrids were hitting on Sat? At least then I will know if I was using the wrong lures or just suck at fishing....
