Headed out with all-star crew Hart Attack Larry and Pete. Tried all over the bay- Keansburg flats, Navy Pier, ran outside off the beach, ran back in to the Reach, then back to the Triangle. We had a consistent pick of doggies, skates, and sea robins. Nothing worked, bucktails, bait, nada. Larry finally did get a short, but that was the only fluke we got. It seemed like no one else was catching, either, no nets moving on the party boats, etc.
Conditions weren't bad, we had a nice breeze to push us along until the tide change, but the fluke just wouldn't cooperate.
They may have been scared off by Larry's new hat:eek:

A buddy and I took our kids out for a few hours yesterday. We got 3 fish, two keepers and a short. I thought we had a bad day fishing. From the sound of it, we knocked them dead.

Worst bay fishing I can remember.
But ironically there is really good amount of bait
I caught and used spearing, peanuts and even a good amount of 3" snappers
Fished off Staten Island by kayak and NOTHING
Shocked

My daughter and her fiancé ended up with a 26" and an 18" in the bay yesterday (Sunday). Hopefully a sign of things to come!

Fished magic hours on Saturday and had a decent pick until the storm blew through. Even had a few caught afterwards.

I know one back bay party boat had a good day on Friday with fluke to #8.

We fished sunday, going to put up the report now...pretty much similar results with dogfish city everywhere we went, but we did get lucky and manage about 10 fluke with 3 keepers 18-19" between the two of us.

Sorry, Duff, no pics. But, it is a dizzying array of flaps, strings and buttons. Truly majestic headgear to say the least.

We did sunday also from 6am until 11am one keeper and one 4.6 lb keeper just off the Naval Pier on white jig with white 5" gulp. Plus two shorts, and some other trash fish.

Fellow Anglers,

Let me throw a few numbers and thoughts at you.

I've been fishing in NJ since the purchase of my first boat in 1978....39 years ago. After a hiatus from fishing, I'm onto my second boat now and I fish the following inshore areas...just to name a few, I use for fluke. All of Raritan Bay, Sandy Hook Bay, the VZ Bridge area south of the Red Church, Fisherman's Buoy, Scotland just to name a few along with a good assortment of rough bottom pieces on my GPS.

Never in 39 years have I witnessed such a poor fluke season, so far, as this one in 2017. Remember, I said "so far". After lights out slamming fluke in the Reach last year, for this to turn around the way it has says something went drastically wrong.

To make matters worse, I'm sure NOAA monitors these reports and will use it as fodder and "we told you so" crap for the 2018 reg's which I will bet we are looking at 2 @ 20-21". Mark my words. The you know what is going to hit the fan next year.
