gonna get serious about froggin this year, looking to increase my hookup ratio. anybody have experience with the "Sebile Pivot Frog"? is bending the hooks and shortening/staggering the skirt worthwhile? opinions on lake fork trailer hooks?

Sorry I don't have any experience with the Sebile Pivot Frog but use Spro Frogs and Poppers a lot. I usually shorten the skirts and bend the hooks out a little. Prior to doing this I was missing a lot of bites from bass grabbing the skirt and not getting hooked and even dumping the frogs after exploding on the top water.
Its just too bad these manufacturers don't produce these frogs the way fisherman want and use them.
I would be interested to know how the Pivot Frogs work.

-supposedly the stock design is to keep the frog weedless. despite being bottom weighted there's still a chance it will land inverted in slop and pickup debris.

ordered one yesterday, will update. :D

I've used booyah pad crashers, Bass Pro, scum frog, and all produce about the same if the fish are in the mood for fogs on tops. Gotta wait on the hook set for sure and once the hook is set I never had a problem with them coming unbuttoned. I even smash the barbs down all the time...i do this to all my hooks/lures to make it easier on the release and if a bass gets gut hooked.
Key thing is to have a senko or similar rigged up on another rod. If a bass blows up on the frog but misses throw that right into the spot and let it sink...they will take it more times than not. That has worked for me so many times it's stupid. And every time it happens I can't believe it works. It's a must have for frog fishin in my book. nothing beats a frog bite.

Shortening the skirt and bending out the hooks will certainly help, but the most important thing about fishing frogs is to wait a couple of seconds after the strike before setting the hook. This gives the bass a chance to get it all the way into his mouth, and will improve your hookup ratio tremendously.
The best frog I've ever used is the Strike King Pop-n Grass Frog, which is made out of foam. Despite having a mostly exposed hook it is almost completely weedless, and I miss very few strikes with it.

Thanks for the info. One of the things I'm hoping the pivot hook design improves for me is situations where the fish is striking rather than eating (usually when the frog first hits the water or when I intentionally cast on shore and hop it into the water). Another is the knee jerk instinct to set the hook following a blowup rather than waiting to feel the load (I've even tried closing my eyes on the retrieve but the sound still triggers the hook set reaction). Patrick Sebile claims an 80% hookup ratio in testing, the mailman just delivered the new frog so hopefully I'll have an update later tonight.

This is great advise for all. Thanks for the info!

+1
I always have a throw back lure ready to go regardless of what I am throwing. Senko and Keitchs are my go too.
Re Frogs: As other have stated I also have found better hookup ratios by bending the hooks up and out. Most come out of the packages with them pointing inward and away from the fishes mouth??
I have found the videos that Matt Allen puts out on his Tactical Bassin' site to be really helpful on this topic.
