Lake George Question

I will be going up to Lake George at the end of the month. Never been there before but I will probably get one full day to fish. Is there anywhere to rent a rowboat? What should I be fishing for this time of year (hoping someone says pike or lakers) so I'm not wasting my time? Thanks in advance!

Where are you staying?

The marinas have rental boats. I am not aware of any that rent row boats. Probably too much of a liability with the big boats and big water.

Based on an MDW report below looks like bassin' is heating up. You will need down riggers for trolling the lakers this time of year

might be worth hiring a charter or guide rather than battling the learning curve.

Yeah, I've been looking around and it seems it's either motor boats or canoes/kayaks. And also very expensive. I'll probably just stay shore bound. Thanks for the info though!

depending where you're staying, you may be in luck...a lot of the places have rowboats and/or kayaks available to guests...if not, check out lake george kayak company in bolton for rentals; they are right by the sagamore and pretty close to some of my favorite spots on LG
there are also some smaller mom and pop type places that may have yaks and maybe even rowboats for rental, but I can't think of any off the top of my head :(
( I know of 2 places, bonnie view and northward ho,both in Bolton that have row boats and kayaks for guests; may even be cheaper to rent a room for the 'day' and grab a rowboat from them, depending on rates?)

A lot of places let guests use rental boats for free. Double check to see if your place has any. If not, I would honestly bite the bullet and get a boat, preferably with a trolling motor. Fishing there is on fire and you wont regret it. If not, you couldn't go wrong with a kayak either. Tons of bass around docks and in humps/structure in 20-30 fow.

I have fished from the docks down near the steam boat area and caught lots of fish, multi species. As mentioned above, check to see who might have a rental or with your place. Get out near some of the islands for some great FW fishing..

Thanks for all the info, I'll call the hotel today and see if they rent any boats. I'm staying in Lake George itself (I guess that's the name of the town?) but am willing to travel anyway.

Renting small boats on Lake George is pretty much a thing of the past..Probably be easier to find a motel or cabin complex that offers free row boats..But be alert this lake is huge with strong winds and lots of careless big boat operators..Especially during summer months..Good luck..BTW if you don't mind spending 400 or more dollars a charter there might be worth your while. Also check out evening bass charters for a few hours usually about 2 hours..Worth every penny..

Shore access is very limited, it's almost all private property. You can fish were Shaky said and there is a park in Bolton Landing where you can fish from a pier, but you have to pay to park. East side of the lake is all private. There are a couple of state parks on the west shore you can fish for a day use fee.

Been there many times over the years since working there one summer when I was in college in 1970.

The only times I've had good fishing was when I chartered a boat. You can get a 2 or 3 hour trip for a reasonable price.

Don't forget the Hudson River up there I rented a two person kayak up river and fished the whole way down to the last pickup killing smallies, the earlier the better to start, but also worth a day if you have time...the second seat was for my gear btw, but I do remember a few skinny sections... know what your doing or keep it tied up!!

Head over to Bolton Landing or Hague to rent a boat (pretty cheap) or do one Better and head over to Justy Joes in Hague and he'll put fish in the Bucket!
