I'm new to boating in the area and was wondering if any of you had recommended "to-do's" in the area. Also, are there any areas I can beach my boat and hang out with the family? Any info is appreciated. I have a 17 foot center console.

Inside Sand Hook. Skull Island. Can plant bow on beach and have 7 feet of water under the stern. Tricky to get into at low tide. High tide very easy enter from main channel south of Buoy 9 in Shrewsbury.
Also around the bend in Air Force cove in the Navesink River off the Park.

Skull Island is a popular spot but you need to be very careful especially at low tide... Lots of old submerged pilings and rock 20 or so feet off the insland towards land which I found first hand :(
Make sure you have a good chart plotter and you can follow the unmarked channel that starts in the Highlands and runs to the Island like you see below.
Good luck, go slow and be safe.

Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to check them out. I use navionics and see that it shows some underwater obstructions and pilings near skull island. Hopefully my chart shows everything.

Yes, stay south of the rock outcropping at western tip of skull.
Same thing on the Navesink River and Air Force cove. It has a rocky entrance if you go straight in ( not around the sedge island) from the NS Buoy side on low tide. I "ouched" there in my crabbing boat once.
A good plotter will show all this.
