Long time lurker and hoping this community can help out. My father in his old age has upgraded his boat and will hopefully be doing some more fishing. As a congratulations/birthday gift I would like to get him a couple rod/reels setups. Most of his stuff is older, heavier and lunky. I would like to get him some lighter more modern setups for fluking. Hoping for some recommendations on what size rod and what action and what reel, however my options are limited to companies owned by Newell Brands so either Penn, Abu Garcia, Shakespeare, or ugly Stik. Thanks for the help!

Best thing to do would be to take him to one of our sponsor tackle shops and talk to them. Tell them the type of fishing you'll be doing and how much you want to spend. They'll set you up right.

I would love to support the sponsors! however my wife is an employee of Newell so she gets a very significant discount going direct to those brands websites

The Abu Garcia Record 60 is an excellent reel for most inshore fishing. Just started using a Penn Fathom 30 for stripers, so far it has been satisfactory. I don't use any of the mentioned rods, so I can't help.

How big is the boat and where do you plan to use it?

I just googled it, wow interesting. Sorry I read "Newell" and got all gitty.
Penn Battle combo: Model#BTLII3000701ML or Model#BTLII3000701ML would be good choices for what you're looking to do.

Newell is the parent company of Jarden which owns Pure Fishing (Abu, Penn, Fenwick, etc). Although they've recently made huge budget slashes, fired their entire marketing team in SC so who knows what's going to happen with those brands.
