Since the GOM is effectively closed for cod, where would one go to fill a cooler these days? I'm not talking a run out to the 20 mile wrecks for 2-3 fish, I want a freezer full. Is it even possible anymore?

Cod fishing hasn't been the same for quite sometime. I would wait until April or May and jump with the Russian Roulette or head north, still doubt you're going to fill your freezer.

Miss montauk if you're up for the ride. Good shot at a mess of fish out east. Plus porgies and ling.

The big blue non sponsor out of fishermans supply is running a few block island cod trips starting this Friday night long boat ride but beats all the traffic

Block Island fishing has been decent. Only a 10 fish limit of 5 to 15lb fish so that is unlikely to fill a freezer.

yeah, but that's not a bad catch these days. I miss the days of filling the 150qt cooler and eating fillets out of the freezer for the next 6 months. Cod still is and has always been my favorite eating fish.

Hi Jim,

Give me a PM. Fished last weekend on a NS boat on the SE side of Block Island. Had 4 cod, 2 shorts and a big porgy. My friend caught 8 cod. Pool winner was 16 lbs, but we both had a few codfish in the 8-10 lb range.

It's not worth the ride for 10 fish. I rather just wait it out until April and May for some Jersey Cod on the Russian Roulette.

We had limits every cod trip last fall on the Bad Influence. Everyone went home with at least 30 lbs of fillets. Also, when sea bass was open we stopped a caught them too. All jig fishing with no bait!

Learn to appreciate Pollack.

The fishery is strong up North and there is no bag limit.

And it is a blast to catch them on the jig.

And even though Cod is closed (except for a few months where you can keep 1) we threw back at least 10 keepers each for 2 days straight on a 6 pack trip in September.
