I was going to head out tonight and catch some fish and was wondering what the bass are hitting on.

If your not fishing from a boat and are doing some surf fishing. Hot lures are 6" white storm shad, 6" pencil popper, medium size Danny plugs, 1oz Casting spoon and a egg sinker / 14" of 50lb floro, and a treble hook for snag and drop if the opportunity comes up.

And if you're there after dusk and before dawn... I can highly recommend my old standby that's still catching bass.... Black Bomber!!! It's still working for me year after year :D

Probably one of the best time tested lures right there... Most people think light colors work best at night but fish see the darker colors better.
