Headed out Sunday 10/30 @ Zero dark thirty from SRI. Seas were calm and wind was light. Took a ride to an offshore wreck, dropped the anchor and by time we came tight, it was game on! Small porgs to start but the keepers were in the mix. My youngest gets pulled to the rail and calls for back up, you guess it...GATOR BLUE! Weighed in at 18lbs. Was thinking time to go, but every 15 mins or so we would get a real nice keeper. Doggies were present which made dads mate work even harder.
Now the problem...this is like the 5th trip in a row where the son beats the dad for the pool! Either I'm loosing my touch or JR is stepping it up. Regardless I want to always have this problem as this is a Parents dream come true! So its getting to be around 12:30 and Christian starts fighting a beast as I look over and his rod is doubled over. I'm thinking blue or big dog. He shouts "color" then immediately says "get the net, get the net"... He remained calm and he hoisted it over the rail. Hit the scales at 5.45#. Biggest SB on my boat to date! WTG Christian!
Cut squid worked good, my old salted clams were no match for the very hungry SB. 10oz sinker with gulp, but they got chewed apart after a drop or two. Saw alot of sea urchins get spit up. This jumbo, we pulled a 6" porg out of its mouth! They were feasting down there on everything!
Got to give a big thanks to a good friend for pointing me in the right direction, made my kids day that they will be talking about for a long time!
Finished the day with a full cooler of quality keepers, smiles all around, and enough meat for the week to keep all happy.
