Gambler had good catch, canyon tuna fishing on our 36 hour trip with the NJFISHING.COM crew, put together by famous tuna slayer, Chuck Eaton.
We hit some lobster pot bouys for a good shot of really nice mahi. Rob C was floating out a chunk on a spin-rod for mahi when his bait got crushed by a screaming 50lb yellowfin.
We then tried a couple drifts near some commercial squid boats and had some good bites there, landing a couple more big yellows.
Just after dark, we anchored at the west wall of the Hudson canyon in continually calming seas. Through the night we caught a few smaller yellowfin, 5 small swordfish that we released and one keeper sword. There were plenty of squid around and the crew kept busy catching those for live baits.
Near daybreak, we had a flurry of action on mixed sized yellowfin up to 75 lbs and a few bigger longfin tuna. Throughout the rest of the day, we manged a steady 1 to 3 tuna fight at a time.
There were some big bluedogs harassing occasionally but nothing too bad.
Most of the fish were taken on bait. Not too many jigged this time.
Some of the guys dropped deep for tilefish and had a pretty good mix of those too. One beauty about 25lbs.
I believe everyone on board had at least a couple tuna and a few mahi.
Weather permitting, we'll be headed out again this weekend and hopefully Monday night. The next trip with openings is Tuesday November 15 leaving at 10 PM retuning Wednesday Nov 16 at 10 PM.
