Tenacious Sportfishing

After 3+ weeks at the dock we hosted Gary Fekete from Byram NJ and his friends for an overnighter in the Hudson. Afternoon trolling was uneventful, except for some Mahi, till we got to the northeast corner and two rods went down hard. One pulled the hook immediately and the other pulled the hook after a few minutes. We set up for chunking there in 71.8 water and at 7:30
four chunking rods went down at once and we had a Chinese drill on our hands. Three rods tangled and untangled, two rods tangled and untangled another 3 rod tangle and one line pops. Finally three lines straightened and one by one the guys landed three yellowfins. High fives and no further action till 8:30 when another rod goes off and they land another yellowfin. All goes quiet during the night and we were sure the yellowfins would return toward morning or false light. But it didn't happen. We had one more bite early with a small sword which eventually pulled the hook. Morning trolling was uneventful and after pot hopping a few more mahi we headed for home. Highlight of the trip was watching Nate Hilbert, on his first tuna trip, fight and land his first tuna. Gary does a couple trips with us each year and his crew is always upbeat, full of laughs and a pleasure to be with. Great weather, great friends, good fishing and a bonus, some fish to enjoy at home.
