Caught one today. Do you eat them or they contain toxins?

First time reel in this kind and don't know what to do with it.
Thanks!

When in doubt, release it...

The bar jack has a significant risk of carrying the ciguatera toxin in its flesh, and numerous reports of people contracting the poisoning after consuming the fish. A comprehensive study of the toxin in the West Indies listed the bar jack as a species of intermediate risk of carrying the toxin although most cases in St. Thomas of the Virgin Islands can be traced back to the bar jack.

Do NOT take the chance of eating it.. If you get Ciguatera, you will be so horribly sick, you will wish you were dead.. I know a guy that had it...

Throw that fish out.. It should have gone right back into the drink... bob

Most likely a banded rudder fish. Extremely unlikely to be a bar jack. Did it have bars on its sides?

Why keep it if you are not sure if it edible or even legal to keep based on size?

Yeah you should have just let it go. Never keep something you know nothing about. Its a waste at this point.

not good advice,, he didn't know what it was,,, bar jacks are rare this far north, and not many are caught by recs, they don't take bait readily, but down south they are loaded with cig and if by chance he DID catch and eat one, it could put him in the hospital for a week... it was most likely what we called a for decades a pilotfish. I refuse to use the name we call them today...

Yes it has bars on its side. Yellowish color. Small, size like porgy. It seems has no scales.
I will upload the picture if I figure it out how.

Thanks for all the constructive criticism. Lessons learned.

Caught one last week with the porgys. We used to catch them by the hundred on the Long branch pier under the chum grinder.. They're not pilot fish but small jacks with a very gold shiny tail third. They also have a small grey band through the eye. Absolutely not the unmentionable BRF.

I had ciguatera poisoning. Make no mistake...It's horrible and there's nothing you can do about it.
