Dear Anglers,

Our research team will be conducting a black sea bass tagging study this fall and winter to estimate the discard mortality rate of fish that are caught and released during the deepwater offshore fishery. We will also explore methods for increasing survival by developing best practice guidelines while capturing, handling, and releasing black sea bass.

As part of the study, we need to identify the most common tackle that anglers use in this fishery. Please take a few minutes to complete the following survey and identify the tackle that you most commonly use while targeting black sea bass at deepwater (>100 feet) shipwrecks or reefs.

Please feel free to message me with any questions regarding the survey or our tagging study.

Thanks for your help and support,
Doug

I took the survey, but who knows, maybe I didn't do the right thing, in retrospect.. I can see the storyline in the APP Fishing/Boating section...

NMFS Recommends Black Sea Quota Reduction...

" Based on angler surveys conducted by several eastern US universities,in particular NJ based Rutgers University, the National Marine Fisheries Service has come to the conclusion that Black Sea Bass are being over exploited in the NY Bight ,and further restrictions to the recreational fishery should be forthcoming to retain the biomass at a sustainable level".. Blah blah blah....

I'm just having a bit of fun here, but you never know.. It won't be the first time sport fishermen have shot themselves in the foot.. Remember the "generous " 17 inch limit a few years ago???..... bob

Done and I believe its important. While no one can say for sure that the information may eventually be mis handled I will defer to a man I respect and consider a mentor who in recent conversations on regulations said this

" While we may not always know how the information may be handled if the intention is to HELP recreational fisherman than what we do know is that if we DONT share the information than it is a given that NO HELP can be obtained"

In this case I believe the intentions by Rutgers are good, what happens to that information afterwards is another story but worth the risk.

If we don't share they will gather the information by the same methods we distain and call bad science so who better than those on the water to share. I also think we should be using the NJDEP Angler Survey and use it on good days but always on bad days!

If you have time please fill it out and submit it.

Thanks to everyone who has already filled out the survey! We appreciate the assistance and support. If you participate in the offshore black sea bass fishery and have not already done so, please consider filling out the tackle survey by this Sunday October 16.
