Don't know where you were but I was out near the tip of the hook fishing for fluke on Sat morning and i did see one of the blitzes you're talking about. lasted maybe 5 mins with birds everywhere.
Didn't bother coming closer to check it out because i don't know how to target bluefish with metal.
Got 8 fluke shorts, 3 sea robins and a few snappers from the surf. Fished from 7:30- noon. Was a fun day!

most likely small blues eating small bait. if you could reach the area of the blitz with a small metal jig and just real it really fast you could probably get into them. if that didn't work jigging it back to you probably would. if neither worked i'd try a different sized lure. they're almost always very very aggressive but can get really keyed in on bait size that they're eating sometimes.
Super

There were albies in the surf on Saturday and Sunday too.

Wow that's awesome! Thanks for the photos, that is pretty much what i saw but from a distance. Had a feeling that albacore may be in there with the blues but that confirms it.
Looks like they are biting on the teaser rather than the actual metal though - interesting! Gotta make a note of that and try it.
And thanks for the tips Chrisper, I will employ them.
