Caveman Sportfishing

We have not posted much the last few weeks as we have rescheduled all our offshore trips due to lack of quality tuna fishing in the southern canyons and have done almost all 5-6 hour inshore trips recently. We have always had a policy that if there is not a realistic opportunity to put a good catch together on tuna we ask our charters to reschedule and in some cases refund their deposit if they cannot reschedule. The last few weeks we have rescheduled all our overnight trips because of the lack of tuna in our local canyons. We have only been to a local canyon once since early July as the best tuna fishing was inshore about 40 miles from Cape May almost the whole month of July and part of August but this died a quick death a few weeks ago when the water temps climbed up to 81-84 degrees in mid-August. This all changed yesterday when the Yellowfin bite went off big time in the Washington Canyon with some boats catching 10-19 Yellowfins all on day troll trips up to 75-80 lbs. tuna. We have plenty of open dates for overnight trips down to the Washington Canyon in the next few week including Labor Day weekend. Many of the boats down our way in South Jersey, DE and MD and only do day trips but for those that overnight I am sure Big Eyes will be there late afternoon into the night along with the Yellowfins for those that spend the night in the Washington. Great news after some very slow and inconsistent tuna fishing recently and let’s hope the tuna stick around for a while like they did in past years in the Washington Canyon.
We may put some last minute open boat trips together over the next few days weather permitting to take advantage of this tuna bite.
