Today report from Massey chunking for Yellowfins
Horrible fishing and worst trip of the summer for us. No boat traffic to contend with and still the tuna fish were almost nonexistance except for a few islolated catches by a few boats with live spot. Even live bait was no guarentee of getting bites as I do not think more than a few boats had more then a couple of bites all day. The water temperature was 78 degrees on Sunday when friends did extremely well chunking Yellowfins but jumped to 83 today only 24 hours later and I think this killed the tuna bite today. Just my opinion but over the years hot water is great for billfish but not so good for our local species of Yellowfin.
Similar in the Wilmington Canyon where the Big Eye bite as on fire during the daytime on Friday with all boats getting at least one shot at them and one boat around us had 5 one at once but only landed one. We got ours after a long drawn out 3 1/2 hours with over 20-22 lbs. of drag on a 30 class reel. I do not think one big eye was caught on Sunday or Monday after such good big eye fishing on Friday. The White Marlin fishing was very good also as we hooked up 3 on while targeting big eyes.
