I have been fending off the need to tog by watching some videos on YouTube of blackfish, blackfish feeding habits etc. Was watching Capt. Monty on the NS in MD tag fish and they were almost exclusively fishing snafu rig. Anyone who's fished down that way know why. I use the rig as well but is it more popular down south, or maybe coincidence.

Monty is in OC Maryland and a reef restoration guy to put it simple. Great capt with a loyal following. His regulars use all different type setups, You might think me crazy but people are switching to small jigs with spinners, Getting away from the heavy sticks..

Here is the main reason they use the snafu rig down in MD. When we travel down that way we are not looking for a true trophy. Many times a 10-11 pound fish does not even win the pool. We are looking for a true pig. You can not get away fishing light leader down there like we can here. You will catch fish down there with traditional rigs we use here but you will get your heart broken if you are fishing to light. I personally like to fish the slider rig as it gives me the opportunity to adapt and fish bait many different ways. The problem with the slider rig when targeting big fish is if fish is hooked on sliding hook it will cause a kink in your line and you may break off a big fish. We many times use larger baits and fish them whole. That is the advantage of fishing the snafu as you can tie with heavier leader, have 2 hooks in one crab without having issue of kinking leader. Also if you are lucky enough to catch a WR fish you would be disqualified if using sliding hook. You can use whatever rig you want when fishing with Monty. If you ask mate to tie you up they will tie snafu rig for you on that boat
Hope that answers your question
