I never really fished for porgies and haven't directly targeted sea bass either.
Goin out with Capt Ray on the Mad Gaffer so I know he will have all that you really "need" but having said that... What should I grab at the tackle shop for any "advantages"? And what set ups do you suggest? I've seen the high low set up... Is that the best way to go? Thanks in advance for the help!

Doug
I hear you with nobody tying your rigs but I have fished with Billy and Ray before, Billy is the man and trust him and his rigs, if not have him tie one on for you ( that is a rig - ;) ) and just copy it from there
Capt. Billy is da man and wont due you dirty , that costs extra - :D
Sea bass is a basic hi low rig like blackfish , same rocky conditions, porgies I couldn't tell you, bring leader and like #2 or #3 maybe #4 of your favorite hooks.
Good Luck and let us know how you do

If you want to make your own.. Its a standard high/low bottom rig.. GOLD hooks have always worked better for me, #4 hooks,#6 if the Porgies are a little smaller.. Use a red bead before the hook.. I have also found over the years a standard flounder type rig with BOTH hooks on bottom will outfish a high/low rig for porgies, but its not a huge difference.. Some days the Porgies simply key on the bottom hook exclusively, and having two on bottom will help the hookup rate... If you get tired of Porgies after a while, put small bergall strips on each hook of the rig and lightly jig it.. that will get you into sea bass and any fluke that are around without so many Porgies cleaning you out.. Porgies outfight just about anything pound for pound.. Your first 2 pounder will have you shaking your head.. They fight like an elite game fish pound for pound. They don't eat as well as Sea bass.. They are ok, but I find them a bit strong in the larger sizes,, The smaller they are the milder.... You will LOVE the combo of Sea bass /Porgy fishing.. It is a ton of fun with usually great action.. Its probably my favorite type of fishing trip... bob

Ritchie could be right, but most commercial bottom rigs for Porgies and Sea Bass will have a red bead.. Does it make a difference?.. After 50 years of bottom fishing, I'm still not sure, but I always put them on, and always have caught more porgies with gold hooks.. I don't think sea bass care much either way about hook color... Does a huge Gulp Swimming Mullet on a hook with a glob of clam catch more bottom fish than a plain clam??.. Not sure of that either, but thats what everyone uses and swears by these days... bob

Get one proto type from a mate on a bottom head boat.Same length, pound test, same hooks. If you do not know how to tie a perfection loop go on You Tube. I have a board with a nail in it that i put on the coffee table in front of the TV.The nail is so i can put my perfection loop over it to give me tension when sliding the knot.Same with black fish rigs.Pre tie a bunch.Your hands are cold in the winter. All of this saves fishing time as well as $$$$:)
