I know some people tip there Gulp with strips of bait. I always thought that tipping the gulp would affect the action so I don't do it. What do you do? And what are your experiences between using strip bait and not using strip bait. Thanks in advance....Ken.

Our experience this year has been that bait certainly adds to the catch and/or bite. (2) Two Spearing and strip baits on everything. They seem to want meat along with the gulps on most days

I'm with Dales on this... When the fish are suicidal it might not make much of a difference but most days it does...
Was fishing gulp over a bucktail on my teaser tipped with a strip of squid and a spearing just the other day. Had a fish who clinged on to the squid/spearing and although he never touched the hook he stayed with the bait the whole time... It wasn't until I went to lift the fish that he let go.

I fish a jig/gulp combo 95% of the time for Fluke.. but to me, unless its sweetened with a little meat, I feel like I got a nice bun with no weenie.. maybe its a confidence thing.. but the fish prove it to me most days... My bucktails usually get a 3-4" gulp, and always trail a strip of something.. my 6" gulp teaser also usually gets a small piece of meat... perhaps this means I should golf.. but I know some even eliter elitists who would offer the same advice if I don't catch everything on my flyrod...
One of the best anglers I've ever known said something to me many years ago that has always stuck in my head, and has proven true most days..

Skip the gulp just use strip baits on the bucktail. Fluke ribbons, squid strips, searobin dluefish, bunker. All work well and you can save a few bucks;)

I was thinking this also. If we are tipping the gulp with bait why not just use bait and forget the gulp?
I always tip my gulp with some type of strip bait. It is just what i have confidence in. I have seen guys just use plain gulp and catch very well.
Go with what you have confidence with and you will catch better.

I add gulp to meat for the same reason I add meat to gulp.. more bites.. gulp adds a little extra color, attraction and stink....if they pull off the bait, I still have a gulp.. and vice versa..(btw.. I used twister tails before they invented gulp ..same reason..) they will certainly eat a gulp by itself.. but I still believe adding a little meat puts a lot more fish in my box..

Fish gulp or bait not both, I have only seen one person do well using gulp and bait on the same hook, I see a lot of peeps use both meat and Gulp on the same hook and catch many many shorts. Case in point, guy next to me yesterday fishing that way had a lot of shorts and 2 barely keepers I had 5 keepers dropped 3 good fish, one of which took drag. To me, fishing both is contrary. Sometimes if they aint biting right , I would try meat on either the top or bottom, if its really bad heck Ill try anything.:p

Well here is my take. Was told this by a well respected Captain and seems to hold true.
Add the meat spearing in the river or bay. Just gulp maybe some fluke belly in the ocean. Spearing squid kellie etc seem to bring the undesirables to your hook in the ocean . That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Depends on the day and where you are. In RB I'd tip it with fluke belly or something, in the ocean just Gulp is much better IMO but there are days they want some belly... I prefer to fish just Gulp personally especially in the rocks. Use what you're confident in.

My thoughts exactly. I did that on one boat and got called out by the capt.

At the end of the day, we do exactly that........confidence breeds success more than anything else.

Gulp season is almost over.... soon to be replaced by live snappers, mullet or even spots........

I don't get out as often as some/most of the others here, but I will say, my last trip out I started putting a single spearing on in addition to the gulp and I did WAY better than without it. There was basically no drift and the only people catching were bucktailing, which I was. But something I noticed. I'd sometimes get a few hits and then it would stop. Sure enough the spearing would be gone. Every fish I caught was with gulp and spearing that day. Must be some extra smell they like on the calmer days? I dunno, but it worked.

Based on the title of this thread, I would give the Gulp 15-20% if they do a good job...
I always hang a strip on my bucktail/Gulp combo.

a GOOD bucktailer fishing gulp will outfish all those baits 95% of the time.
Bucktailing creates reaction bites even when a fish isnt in a feeding mood..

Limit fishing, today on the Down Deep. Good ratio of shorts to keepers.
What did we catch most fish on? (for me all fish). Hook, gulp & strip!

Definitely fishing confidently is very important. The last thing you want to do is doubt your set up and waste time changing presentation then jigging/fishing or worse moving from what could be a productive drift!
I fish Spro bucktail on bottom hook with gulp mullet and strip bait. Top hook is strictly gulp usually curly or something straight like an alive minnow gulp. They usually hit on the top hook for me 80% of the time which never has any "real" bait.
Fishing with a presentation that you have produced with consistently in the past is definitely key.

We start out with nothing but gulp on the jig and if we see they are all over the meat we tip it with squid, bunker, blue fish, spearing, sea robin, tommy cod, etc.
Some days it doesnt matter if you have that meat on the hook or not as they are inhaling the jigs.
