Got up before early and made it to the county park at sunrise and walked the banks of Lake Mercer for the first time to see if it would be a good spot to bring my 11 yo Daughter and 7 yo son - they are not too keen on lots of walking.

Pretty windy day with the water blowing in to the bank i was on. Only manage one small LMB, 3 perch and a couple of shiners that were as big as 2 of the smaller perch

Afterwards a I took a ride down hughes drive over to where the Miry Run is dammed up to scout it also, As i have never been there either but had heard about it from another fisherman i ran into earlier this year. Did see one rather large fish jump (prb a Carp) across the way and quite a few fish risin but didnt get a nibble in the 20 minutes there.

Tonight I had an hour or so before dark to fish, and headed back to the assunpink spillway to target carp. Set up 1 rod with corn while alternated between my throwing a small kastmaster spoon and a rapala jointed minnow while waiting for a bite. Managed to get one small white crappie on the spoon before catching a pair of carp the first about 24" and the second around 21". the boxes in the pictures are 9" apiece for reference.

Unfortunately I only was able to fish for 30 minutes as I had to make an emergency visit to walmart to get aforementioned daughter a replacement birthday present for the one that was supposedly delivered today.

Solid report-and a good day. Good luck with your kids-any day fishing with them should be good-
Are u hooking your corn or using a hair rig

no hair rigs yet ... spent 4 hours this afternoon by the pool reading lots of old threads from this site on carp and looking up the various rigs and seeing whats available on amazon while the kids swam (funny that they both said they were too tired to go fishing)

had some cans of corn that the good by date expired so i just hooked a couple of kernels on a size 8 eagle claw baitholder snell attached to a snap swivel with a 3/8 oz bullet weight and a bead above the swivel. Flipped it maybe 8 feet from the bank and then tossed a handful of kernels over the top of my bait.

i may invest in some hair rigs or try making some myself for when this simple approach isn't working.
