I very rarely do any surf fishing but I'm taking a trip to Ocean City Md in September and would like to do some fishing off the piers. I have an 8' St Croix surf rod that is one piece that I like but don't use too often.

With all the other crap that I have to take, I'd rather not have to cart the one piece rod in my SUV because it takes a lot of room and could be damaged by shifting luggage etc.

Is it feasible to have a good rod builder turn this into a 2 piece? Or should I just buy a cheap 2 piece surf rod?

Again, I like this rod and would like to continue to use it for occasional surf/pier trips but a 2 piece would be more convenient.

I do a bit of rod building..I'd say it's not impossible.. but not very practical imo.. A modern style blank-to-blank ferrule is not going to happen.. no custom builders to my knowledge would have the ability to re-manufacture the blank in that manner.. all you could really hope for is an old-school metal ferrule.. which would certainly work.. the metal ferrules create a rigid "dead spot" in the rod..which is why they have been supplanted.. so it certainly wont make the rod perform any better.. but again, it will work..should not be too costly... call some local builders and see what they say.. actually a pretty ez job if you wanted to try it yourself.. just need to take a deep breath and cut your rod in half.. .. then measure the blank diameter at the split, order the right size ferrule from Mudhole or the like, and epoxy it in place.. good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll look for a 2 piece or listen to my wife complain about getting hit in the head with a rod tip for the 4 hour ride. :D

As TB63 said-doable but not really practical as the junction point creates a dead spot, changing the rods characteristics so I've been told by those who know...like broken tips, which I know about:( Like you said, a two-piece is the way to go and keeps your lady happy which is always good!!!;)
