Video tells the story. Headed out with three of my friends. It was my buddys first time on a big shark and he snapped the rod 20 minutes into the fight. Took three hours to get boatside. Enjoy the video

Gaff man almost lost an eye the first time around. What does he do second time around...leans right into the tail again. Oy.

Salt I know we'll get shit for saying so but I agree with you. And I'm not a tree huger who is anti fishing but sharks have been decimated over the years. They are trophy fish in need of protection. Catching a fish like this is a privilege , take a picture and let the big girl go. I guarantee on average a high percentage of the steaks you get from these fish are eventually tossed. These trophy fish deserve a better fate than being hung up by their tails for bragging rights. The last few years it seems everyone is targeting threshers, won't be long before they're gone as well.

It's getting ridiculous. I have no affiliation to Johnny nor capt. Sal. Give the kid a break. He made a mistake....it's behind him. There is not one of you idiots that would have released that awesome catch. It is also exceptional to eat. I think we are here to enjoy fishing, not criticize.

Awesome video!!! Awesome Shark!!! Way to go Johnny!!!

When myself and Mikey got ours last year we shot it in the head with a 12 gage and were never happier! An amazing fishing memory was created on this day! I'm still not sure how we got the 15 foot Thresher on the boat with only 2 of us! It's definitely a task with a light crew! The meat on this Shark is delicious! I must've ate 50 lbs of it last year, lol!!! Some people have different ways of creating memories! "LIVE AND LET LIVE"

Kudos to the kid and his crew for getting the Shark of a lifetime!!!:D

Congrats on a great Fish JB. Lets all remember this:
We all complain that youth is NOT getting into fishing, our future for the sport looks bleak and here you have a young man who has displayed a natural skill, and passion for our sport while I would guess an aspiration for one day being a charter captain. Documentation of "catches" at the scales are part of it and/ or photos which he has done both. Remember when you were 19 and how proud you were to "show off " a huge catch of any kind. We all kept too many for show.
I would be careful of turning a young budding, compassionate, skillful fisherman from turning against the sport or those that support it due to the internet. Its great he's on the water and NOT playing video games or worse.

At 57 years old I release more than I keep but that's because at 19 I didn't and have seen the results.

My guess is that JB will continue to have much success on the water, in life and in time when he decides how to handle that success in "keeping" his catch he will make decisions like those that made him the angler he is today. Either way its great to see a 19 year old have the fishing passion and use his assets in life to a benefit rather than than the alternative some take.

Keep up the good work JB and I hope you get many friends to join you

There's something irrational about how we discriminate between species of fish we kill. Fluke? no problem. Cbass? even better. Photos of dead cows give some people pause. Big game like marlin, big shark...there's just something ugly about people grinning and posing next to such a magnificent animal. There's probably good reasons to object (apex predator, biomass, etc), but I think it's just easier to anthropomorphize a fish as large or larger than us.

I will say this: any video release of big fish earns more kudos from the internet peanut gallery than dead fish at a dock. If JB wants backslaps and thumbs up (and obviously he does), maybe consider C&R for strategic purposes if nothing else.

Let's see some pics of ANY sharks you caught that large then released. I won't hold my breath...never happened. I presume that the only sharks you released were dogfish you caught on party boats, based upon your avatar pic

Recreational fishing has never damaged fish populations and the important thing is to harvest fish and bring it to the table. People dont realize where food comes from and the biggest tragedy will be the day that all hunting, gathering, and even gardening will be forgotten.

It's a free country if you don't like fishing for sharks keep it to yourself. He did nothing illegal & I'm sure none of that fish went to waste there are plenty of people out there lining the docks looking for a sampling of shark steaks even the food banks takes them. Great Job Johnny keep the video's coming & don't let the negative posts get to you.

Hey Saltlife, didn't you just report on a trip on the Tagged Fish where you posed with a Cod and talked about the tons of fish that was kept by all? You seem to be fine on what fish you keep and kill, but are fast to judge others on what they do. Like there is such an abundance of wormy Jersey Cod, why didnt you let that one go? John didn't waste the fish, as anyone who was there cleaning fish, was treated to a nice bagful. Thanks John, the fish was delicious. There are too many jealous people out there.

Never said he wasted the fish. I simply said shark fishing should be catch and release. Learn to read. And yeah i killed ONE ten pound cod and your going to compare that to a 370 pound fish that has been around for over 50 years

Anyways im done with this thread. Everyone knows i dont shark fish and i dont promote it. Plain and Simple. Take it as it is. You dont like it.. TOOO BAD

Why shouldn't cod, ling, or fluke be catch and release? Especially cod, which is heavily fished commercially? Hypocrite.

He's got a valid point. Cod is the poster child for over fishing.

Just sayin'

I love people who want to impose there will on other people. Now he is a bad guy because he killed a legal shark. A 370 lb thresher is way over the 54 inch state and federal shark size limit and he only had one on the boat so I really dont see the problem.Rather then attack him say congrats, or simply just dont say anything.
Congratulations guys great job and an awesome fish
