We went on my buddies boat out of point pleasant. 60 miles out we found our fishy spot. We passed a whale one some bluefin tunas on surface just prior and plenty of tuna chicks around. We released 3 blue sharks and like always as I was about to make sandwiches for the crew in the galley the short line takes off fast. Young Nick was on the rod for about a minute and the big mako goes airborne. I take over and it jumps again. After that it was not fighting hard but dead weight with a small burst every so often. It was wrapped up in the wire leader. After 1 hour and 15 minutes my lower back was on fire. Big Scott took over but he was cramping up after 15 minutes. I had some water and felt better and fought the mako another hour. 2 1/2 hours in we had color. The mako was bent in half wired up like a horse shoe. Everyone was lined up boat side for the end. Shot gun, galf, leader man tail roper. I was on the Rod. 20' to go and snap! 80lb mono broke at the swivel. It was stressed out for 2 1/2 hours. The first 10' was chaffed up a bit form the jumping. . Mako sank to the bottom. It was big estimated 300 to 400lb. We saw it and have it on video but will never know the actual weight. That's fishing and congrats to the winners.
My friends on Tradition got 4th place with a 184 and gave us some nice fillets.
It was a long day and next time we will only try harder.
