Has anyone had much success fishing for fluke in the late afternoon/evening after 5pm? For me, seems like the bite just dies at a certain time. Just curious.

That seems to be our track record too. Even if the tide and wind is right, they do seem to shut down as the sun gets low.

I've had countless good magic hour (4-9 PM) fluke trips.
Back in the late 90's before they rearrange the docks inside the Atlantic Highlands Marina and when they still allowed fishing off the end of the docks, myself and a few others would catch fluke well after dark fishing weighted soft plastics along the shadow line.

They definitely bite after 5 pm. Had good action on monday in the Navesink until 8 pm.

I have to agree with you. It does seem to slow down late afternoon with the Fluke no matter what the tide or wind are doing. I would say around 6.

Was out last night from 4PM to 8:30PM riding out S winds along the beaches and we hit fish after fish after fish......All shorts but tons of fish, on gulp, bucktails( mine of course :D ) and some squid spearing combos.......

Mixed bag for me. I have had em biting good and had them shut down when fishing late afternoon/dusk

IMO I've always seen fluke as a 24-7 feeder. We've caught them well into the dark, throughout the season, and in the early morning hours as well as the evening hours. Some of the summer tournaments we fish allow us to start in the dark and we usually have fish before sunup.
If there's a mad dog bite in the sunlight, do they bite in the dark? That I don't know because we've never fished for fluke LIKE THAT past dark :)
Would be interested to hear more feedback on this - this is just my experience so who knows...

Have caught fluke at the Oceanic Bridge a few hours after sunset as well as Sea bright bulkheads when we had portable lights set up.

I think you have a point.
I have noticed it slows down a lot. I haven't heard anyone say it got getter after low sky sunset.
The responses seem to indicate the smaller ones after twilight and afterwards. Of course there's always an exception.
But we try not to fish for exceptions unless we are just trying to get out of the house. Then we will fish for HOPE. LOL
