I don't fish the pompton river much, but it was definitely worth going early morning because I got to see a few cool fish, including my PB smallmouth bass. She was 17" and 2.3 pounds, beating my 16" and unknown weight from the Raritan River last year.
Also got a slightly smaller one at around 15" (didn't measure or weigh) and the rest were smaller. Other fish included a crappie, perch, largemouth bass, and a rock bass caught by a friend.

U can even get trout there early season. Decent river, easy access. Nice!

that's awesome. Grew up in near Pompton river when I was a kid and we never caught a SM there. Beautiful fish

I hear there are even supposed to be musky and pike in this river from way back when Pompton Lake was being stocked with them, plus the river gets some pike from Passaic river and stockings.
Can't wait to get some kayaks and take them down this river to see what we can catch! All the stretches look very promising, and very similar to Passaic river.

I was trying to catch pickerel so I used a 20 lb leader line and all the fish that were biting didn't even care!

Nice smallies!!

It gets pike every year but the only musky would be the one tiger that came from packanack (sp?) lake when it was drained and the fish were relocated. I also think I remember seeing a pic of someone that caught it and the way some people handle fish, who knows if it survived.......

Also, might want to up that leader to 50#. It won't prevent other fish from biting and while 20# may be good for pickerel, if you hook into a decent pike it will prob shred it...........

.

Nice fish. The Pompton is a good urban fishery.
I used to fish it when the parking/boat-launching situation was better. I don't live in that area and I don't plan to drive all the way out there just to drive around to find a place to park.
